Upper Terrace Field ITHACA COLLEGE
The Ithaca College men’s lacrosse program has
played its home games at Upper Terrace Field
since 1994. With the installation of a new drainage
system and a reseeding of the field eight years ago,
the facility is among the top grass lacrosse locations
in Division III.
Before moving to Upper Terrace Field, the
Bombers played at Allen Field. In 1993, construction
and bad weather forced Ithaca to play its regularseason
home games on the artificial turf of Cornell
University’s Schoellkopf Field.
Ithaca has a .705 winning percentage at home and
has won 54 of 67 games since 2000 on Upper Terrace
Field. The Bombers won eight of their nine contests
there last season. Ithaca hosted the inaugural Empire
8 championship tournament at Upper Terrace Field
during the 2004 season and was again conference
tournament host in 2007.
Ithaca is 6-3 in NCAA playoff games played at
home. The Bombers lost to Cortland, 11-9, in 1979,
defeated Washington (Md.), 15-14, in overtime the
following year and lost, 16-15, to Middlebury in 1998’s
opening round. During the 2001 season Ithaca opened
the tournament with a 14-8 victory over Messiah
and lost to eventual national champion Middlebury,
18-7, in the second round. In 2002 Ithaca defeated
Western New England, 16-15, in overtime and topped
Cortland, 10-9, in the second round. Last year the
Bombers rallied for wins over Williams and Western
New England in the second round and quarterfinals.
Both of the program’s Eastern College Athletic
Conference (ECAC) titles were won at home. In 1973,
under coach Bill Ware, the Bombers posted ECAC
playoff wins over Alfred, 14-11, and Rensselaer,
15-11, at home. The Bombers won the ECAC
Upstate New York Championship in 1993 after beating
Hamilton, 12-7, and Hartwick, 15-11, on Upper
Terrace Field.
Improvements continue to be made to Upper
Terrace Field. Following the 1997 season a fence was
constructed to enclose the playing field and spectator
seating. Protective nets behind the goals, which also
serve as shooting nets, are now in place as well.
ITHACA COLLEGE Men’s Lacrosse History
The men’s lacrosse program at Ithaca has posted
a record of 354-185 in the 39 years that lacrosse
has been a varsity sport. The sport was introduced
at Ithaca by Joe Corcoran through an intramural
program in 1946.
Under the direction of Harold Hatch and with
Corcoran’s help, lacrosse became a club sport in 1949
and play continued through 1951. After a hiatus the
sport was resumed in 1965.
Corcoran eventually became one of the most
respected high school lacrosse coaches in the nation.
He built powerhouse programs in Corning, and in
1987 he was inducted into the United States Lacrosse
Hall of Fame.
The club team was revived in 1965 thanks to the
efforts of Ken Gerbino (an incoming freshman) and
Carlo LoVecchio (who served as the team’s coach).
Bill Ware took over as coach in 1966 and the sport
attained varsity status a year later. The program’s first
game was a 9-7 win over RIT on April 8, 1967.
Ware coached the varsity team for 11 years, posting
a 79-30 record. Ithaca had winning seasons every
year under Ware. The Bombers won the Northern
New York Lacrosse Division Championship in 1970
and 1973, and shared the title in 1969, 1971 and 1972.
The 1973 team also won the Eastern College Athletic
Conference (ECAC) lacrosse title.
Among the early stars for the Bombers were goalie
Tim Cullen and attack Ted Greves. Cullen played
in all 25 games from 1969-71, posting a .777 save
percentage, a school record that still stands. His 5.60
goals-against average ranks second all-time. Greves,
a two-time small-college all-American, is Ithaca’s
career scoring leader. Upon graduation he held 10
school records, including a goals-per-game average
of 5.5 (set during the 1973 season) and a career
scoring average of 4.21. Another top offensive threat
from Ithaca’s early seasons was Ithaca Hall of Fame
member Jim Shaw, who scored 193 points to rank
fourth on the career scoring list.
John Mouradian, who averaged almost three goals
per game from 1974-76, is still involved in lacrosse.
He has served as the general manager of the Buffalo
Bandits of the Major Indoor Lacrosse League (MILL),
now the National Lacrosse League, for three seasons.
The Bandits captured two league titles during his tenure.
Mouradian also served as general manager of the
Ontario Raiders and is currently general manager and
head coach of the San Jose Stealth.
Al Wolski became the head coach in 1978 and
led the team through the 1981 season. The Bombers
participated in the NCAA tournament three times
and compiled a record of 41-15 during his leadership.
In 1978 the Bombers won their first NCAA playoff
game, beating host Salisbury State.
The 1980 team reached the Division III semifinals,
thanks to a 15-14 overtime win over Washington
(Md.). The Bombers were ranked third in the nation,
finishing with a 12-3 record. That team scored 274
goals, averaging 18.3 per game; both are school
records.
Wolski’s teams featured Barry Cohen, a threetime
all-American and Ithaca’s second-leading career
scorer, and Rob Serling, who set school records with
120 career assists and 46 assists in one season. In
1979 Steve Allison became Ithaca’s first all-American
goalie.
Ray Rostan coached Ithaca for two seasons and
posted a 15-10 record. His 1983 team reached the
NCAA playoffs after a seven-game winning streak
during the regular season.
Kevin Spencer took over as head coach in 1984 and
posted a four-season record of 23-26. Derek Keenan
was a standout performer during the mid-1980s. He
ranks sixth on Ithaca’s career scoring list and took
his game to the professional level as a forward for the
Buffalo Bandits. He played professionally for two
years before retiring at the end of the 1991 season.
Goalie Pete Reardon collected a school-record 661
saves in 43 career games.
The 1988 season was the first for current head
coach Jeff Long. Long guided Ithaca to the 1991
Independent College Athletic Conference (ICAC)
championship and the NCAA tournament. In 1992
the Bombers won the Empire Athletic Association
(EAA) crown and again made a trip to the NCAA
tournament. In 1993 Ithaca won the ECAC Upstate
New York title.

Two-time all-Americans goalie Dennis Butler,
defensemen Brian Dattellas, Scott MacCaull and
Mark Maietta, midfielder Jim Bianchi and attack Joe
Hope — played their entire careers under Long. Attack
Charlie Shoulberg ranks ninth in career goals. Attack
Brian Ferry scored at least one point in every game
of his career, and is third in career assists and seventh
in career points.
The 1998 team, which returned to the NCAA
playoffs after a six-year absence, featured all-Americans
Hope, midfielder Steve Fiorelli and goalie Matt
Troy. In 1999 attack E.J. MacCaull (brother of
Scott MacCaull) was the only Bomber to receive all-
American honors. All-American midfielder Dennis
Juleff helped lead the Bombers to an 11-3 record in
2000. In 2001 the Bombers posted a program-best 13
wins and returned to the NCAA playoffs, defeating
Messiah in the first round. In 2002 Ithaca was again
crowned conference champion and advanced to the
quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament.
During the 2003 season, Juleff earned his fourth
ITHACA COLLEGE Jeff Long, Head Coach
Former Naval Academy all-American Jeff Long
enters his 22nd season as head men’s lacrosse
coach at Ithaca in 2009. Ithaca’s winningest
lacrosse coach, Long has compiled an overall record
of 196-103 through 21 seasons. He was voted the
Empire 8 Coach of the Year in 2000, 2002, 2005 and
2006 and 2008.
In 1988 Long took over a team that had gone
9-16 over the previous two seasons; four years later
the Bombers were in the NCAA playoffs. The 1991
team finished 9-3, winning the program’s first ICAC
championship in seven seasons and earning league
coach of the year honors for Long. The next year the
Bombers won the conference (EAA) title, and once
again Long was named coach of the year. He was
also named the Division III coach of the year by the
United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association
(USILA) in 1992.
Long had the Bombers back in the playoff hunt
five years ago, thanks in part to a seven-game winning
streak. In 1998 Ithaca took the next step and reached
the NCAA playoffs for the first time in six years. In
1999 the Bombers posted a 7-6 record and followed
that with an 11-3 record in 2000. In 2001 the Bombers
for the first time in school history. In 2003 Ithaca
finished 11-3 and four Bombers were named
USILA all-Americans. Two years ago, the Bombers
set a school record with 16 wins and reached the
NCAA quarterfinals. Last spring Ithaca reached
the NCAA semifinals after winning a fifth straight
Empire 8 regular-season title and a school-recod 17
wins overall. Ithaca athletes have earned 44 USILA
all-American honors under Long.
Before coming to Ithaca, Long worked as an assistant
coach at the University of Virginia for Jim Adams,
the Cavaliers’ winningest coach. During Long’s three
seasons at Virginia, the team won two Atlantic Coast
Conference (ACC) titles and was a participant in the
NCAA playoffs in each of those seasons. In 1986 the
Cavaliers played in the national championship game,
losing to North Carolina, 10-9, in overtime.
Long’s first head coaching job was at the Naval
Academy. He worked one year with the “B” team
and another season with the preparatory school unit.
Following his Navy tenure, Long was an assistant
at Norfolk Academy for one year before moving to

Alfred University, where he worked as a graduate
assistant and earned a master’s degree in education.
He also spent one season at Washington and Lee
University before joining the Virginia staff.
As a player, Long was a three-time all-American at
Navy. He is Navy’s career scoring leader and played
on four NCAA-playoff teams. Long graduated in
1977 with a bachelor’s degree in political science.
He played on the U.S. national lacrosse teams in 1978
and 1986.
In 1990 Long coached the Syracuse Molson all-star
team that lost by one goal to the U.S. national team.
In the spring of 1998 Long served as an assistant on
Princeton coach Bill Tierney’s staff for the U.S. team
that competed in the International Lacrosse Federation
World Championship.
In the fall Long is an assistant coach for the Ithaca
women’s soccer team, working with the team’s goalkeepers.
Ithaca has advanced to the NCAA playoffs in
15 of the last 19 seasons and won national championships
in 1990 and 1991.
Jeff and his wife, Cathy, reside in Ithaca with their
children, Kelly, Katie and Molly.
THOMAS R. ROCHON
President
Thomas R. Rochon became
the eighth president of Ithaca
College on July 1, 2008. He
holds a doctorate and a bachelor’s
degree in political science from
the University of Michigan, where
he graduated with high distinction.
Prior to his selection as the president of Ithaca
College, Rochon served as executive vice president
of the University of St. Thomas, a master’s comprehensive
university in Minnesota, where he oversaw
the university’s eight schools and colleges and, with
the chief administrative officer, shared responsibility
for the $150 million university budget. He worked to
develop the academic vision of each unit and to set
strategic directions; reorganized academic programs
to create the School of Engineering; and helped launch
a capital campaign centered on endowment support
of students and faculty. An engaged civic leader,
Rochon championed a university effort to strengthen
community service and partnership activities in St.
Paul, leading to Carnegie Foundation classification for
community engagement. Along with his administrative
responsibilities, he was a tenured professor in St.
Thomas’s political science department.
Rochon has an extensive history of accomplishments
as an educator and academic administrator.
Before his position at St. Thomas, as executive director
of the Graduate Record Examinations program at
the Educational Testing Service (ETS), Rochon was
responsible for determining program policy under the
oversight of the board and the ETS vice president for
graduate and professional education. He guided the
addition of analytical writing to the test, the first use
of an essay in the GRE program; he also developed
and implemented a program to empower universities
to create their own test prep courses for graduate programs.
He has held positions in the top leadership at
prominent universities: dean of the School of Politics
and Economics at Claremont Graduate University and
assistant master of Dean Mathey College at Princeton
University. He also held the post of assistant professor
in the politics department at Princeton University
for eight years.
Rochon came to Ithaca College with a distinguished
record of scholarly research. His work focuses on
contemporary European politics and social movements
in Europe and the United States. He is the
recipient of numerous grants and awards, including
the Distinguished Scholarship Award of the
32 Men’s Lacrosse 2009
Collective Behavior and Social Movements section
of the American Sociological Association, and the
Susan Louise Dyer Peace Fellowship at the Hoover
Institution on War, Revolution, and Peace at Stanford
University. Rochon was also a Fulbright lecturer at
Kobe University in Japan. His 1998 book, Culture
Moves: Ideas, Activism, and Changing Values,
received a Distinguished Scholarship Prize from the
American Sociological Association and was named by
Choice an outstanding academic book of 1998. He has
given periodic lectures and seminars on Dutch politics
for embassy personnel of the U.S. Department of
State and has served on numerous advisory and other
boards, including the President’s Advisory Board of
the Universidad Anáhuac del Sur in Mexico City.
Since childhood Rochon has been an avid baseball
card collector. He developed an interest in older cards,
including those dating from the 1880s, and is an active
user of the eBay online auction site.
Rochon is married with no children. His wife,
Amber, until recently worked in a shelter that provided
temporary accommodation to teenage girls; she
is looking forward to continuing her work in the Ithaca
community.
KEN KUTLER
Director of
Intercollegiate Athletics
Ken Kutler is in his sixth year
as Ithaca’s director of intercollegiate
athletics and recreational
sports.
Kutler came to Ithaca after
serving as director of athletics at
two other Division III institutions: Frostburg State
University (1978 to 1986) and Hartwick College (1986
to 2003). At Hartwick, he oversaw a 24-sport intercollegiate
athletic program (including two sports that
competed at the Division I level).
He is a past president of the Empire 8 athletic
conference. Kutler spent 10 years as women’s soccer
coach at Hartwick (1986 to 1993 and again in 2001
and 2002) and guided the Hawks to five appearances
in the NCAA championship tournament.
He is a 1964 graduate of East Stroudsburg
University, where he was an all-region soccer player.
Kutler holds a master’s degree in education from
Temple University and a doctorate in education from
West Virginia.
