Takedown Report - Vol 4 - St. John Bosco High School

SEASON WRAP-UP:
It was another phenomenal year for St. John Bosco
wrestling. Coming in with so many expectations, the boys
not only handled the pressure with poise but rose to the
occasion. We had our highest finish at Masters and State,
taking 2 nd and 4 th , respectively. There was so much to be
proud of along the way: we crowned another state
champion, Aaron Pico (who was also crowned the best
pound-for-pound wrestler in the Nation by the NHSCA); the
Valencia brothers made the State podium again, both
becoming 2x state placers (Anthony 2 nd and Zahid 3 rd ); the
team was undefeated in dual action, taking CIF Individuals
and Duals, was Masters runner-up and took 4 th place at
State. All of this came from a core group that spent
countless hours preparing and competing. But as Coach
Omar says, “we accomplished so much this season, but we
aren’t going to stop until we’re on top of the state podium.”
We are going to keep building on our success. If you have
been around the program, you can see the excitement we
are generating. Our kids club is 75 athletes strong, with
dedicated youth coaches developing the next crop of Bosco
athletes. Our fan base and alumni continue to grow and
provide a tremendous amount of support for the team. This
kind of community is so important to make Bosco the
premier wrestling team in California. A State Championship
team requires a State Championship Community.
This year we say goodbye to a large senior class, but we
have a highly touted group that is going to take us to the
next level. Next year’s team is going to be led by Cheeks,
Anthony, Zahid, Joseph, and Julian. Along with a strong
underclass, we are going to be right there in the mix again
at the State level. It is going to be an exciting time for St.
John Bosco wrestling.

TOURNAMENTS & RESULTS:
CIF State Championships (3/2/13): We were 4th in State
out of 276 schools with 3 placers: one champion, one
runner-up, and one 3rd place. We set a new school record
with three wrestlers placing and capturing 95 points! The
top five teams were: 1. Clovis (179 points, 5 placers), 2.
Poway (109.5 points, 4 placers), 3. Vacaville (97 points, 3
placers), 4. St. John Bosco (95 points, 3 placers), 5.
Santiago (86.5 points, 4 placers). Standout performances
included: Aaron Pico taking home his 1st state
championship. Anthony Valencia (2x state placer) making
the finals. Zahid Valencia (2x state placer) bouncing back
to take 3rd. Joseph Dominguez making the round of 12.

CIF Southern Section Masters (2/23/13): We were CIF
Masters Runner-Up out of 172 schools! We had 7 placers:
three champions, one runner-up, one 5th place, one 9th
place and one 10th place. We set a new school record with
six wrestlers moving on to State! The top 5 teams included:
1. Santiago Corona (168, 7 Qualifiers) 2. St. John Bosco
(144.5 pts, 6Q) 3. Northview (121 pts, 7Q) 4. Los Alamitos
(85 pts, 4Q) 5. ML King (76 pts, 4Q). Standout performances
included: Aaron Pico taking home the lower weight MVP
with 4 falls and 1 default. Anthony Valencia (2x Masters
Champion) defeating #1 ranked Christian Pagdilao in the
finals. Zahid Valencia taking 1st to become 2x Masters
Champion. Individual results:

CIF Individual Championships (2/16/13): We won the
Individual CIF Championship by 69.5 points. We had 10
placers: six champions, one runner-up, one 5th Place, and
two 6th place finishers - with eight qualifying to Masters.
The top five teams included: 1. St. John Bosco (280 pts, 8
Qualifiers) 2. Laguna Hills (210.5 pts, 8Q) 3. San Clemente
(167.0 pts, 7Q) 4. Canyon Springs (152 pts, 5Q) 5. Aliso
Niguel (131 pts, 5Q). Standout performances: Anthony
Valencia (145 lbs) lower weight MVP with 4 falls and 1
technical fall & Robert Flores (170 lbs) upper weight MVP
with 4 falls and 1 major decision. Individual placers:
