activity. These commands generally reside in the directories<br />

fete, /usr/ete,and /usr/lib.<br />

These areas can overlap. For example, if you are the only person using<br />

your machine, then you are both the general user and the system<br />

administrator.<br />

To help direct you to the correct manual, you may refer to A/UX <strong>Reference</strong><br />

Summary and Index, which is a separate volume. This manual<br />

summarizes information contained in the other NUX reference manuals.<br />

The three parts of this manual are a classification of commands by<br />

function, a listing of command synopses, and an index.<br />

3. How the reference manuals are organized<br />

All manual pages are grouped by section. The sections are grouped by<br />

general function and are numbered according to standard conventions<br />

as follows:<br />

1 User commands<br />

1M System maintenance commands<br />

2 System calls<br />

3 Subroutines<br />

4 File formats<br />

5 Miscellaneous facilities<br />

6 Games<br />

7 Drivers and interfaces for devices<br />

8 NUX Startup shell commands<br />

Manual pages are collated alphabetically by the primary name associated<br />

with each. For the individual sections, a table of contents is provided<br />

to show the sequence of manual pages. A notable exception to<br />

the alphabetical sequence of manual pages is the first entry at the start<br />

of each section. As a representative example, intro.1 appears at<br />

the start of Section 1. These intro. section-number manual pages<br />

are brought to the front of each section because they introduce the<br />
