PREFACE TO THE REVISED EDITIONS.
A new edition of this work having become necessary, the
compiler has gladly availed himself of the opportunity of recasting
it in accordance with a plan which he has carefully matured
while using with his pupils the first edition, and which he ven-
tures to hope will commend it more fully as a Text Book for
Pupils in the middle and upper forms in Public Schools,
as well
as to Philological students generally. With this view, among
other fresh arrangements, he has introduced the following
(1) The paradigms are from the outset arranged
so as to
teach the student to distinguish between the stem and the
inflectional element, whilst seeming anomalies are briefly
explained in the observations appended.
(2) The characteristic differences between English
and French
construction and the peculiarities of idiom are throughout
brought under the notice of the pupil in the strongest pos-
sible contrast.
(3) More than a thousand of the most important idioms are
embodied in the book not according to that arbitrary
alphabetical order commonly adopted, but strictly classified
according to the characteristic word they contain.
