and <strong>the</strong> DNS-c<strong>on</strong>cept. Reviews <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>oretical basis <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> DNS-c<strong>on</strong>cept and <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>model</strong><br />

treat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> competiti<strong>on</strong> between fusi<strong>on</strong> and quasi-fissi<strong>on</strong> are given <strong>in</strong> Refs. [17], [21] and [23].<br />

Newer calculati<strong>on</strong>s based <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> MDM <strong>model</strong> are <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g: In Japan an approach is<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g developed <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> basis <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> MDM <strong>model</strong> with <strong>the</strong> fluctuati<strong>on</strong>-dissipati<strong>on</strong> effects [24], for<br />

<strong>the</strong> descripti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> hot fusi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>heavy</strong> symmetric systems lead<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> formati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> super<strong>heavy</strong><br />

elements. Estimati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> formati<strong>on</strong> cross secti<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> super<strong>heavy</strong> elements <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> standard<br />

statistical <strong>model</strong> tak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to account <strong>the</strong> limitati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>on</strong> fusi<strong>on</strong> from empirical systematics were<br />

made <strong>in</strong> Ref. [25]. In [26], a simple <strong>model</strong> for descripti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> cold fusi<strong>on</strong> reacti<strong>on</strong>s based <strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> doubly magic lead target nucleus was proposed. This <strong>model</strong> assumes that <strong>the</strong> compound<br />

nucleus is formed by quantal tunnel<strong>in</strong>g through <strong>the</strong> fusi<strong>on</strong> barrier. The <strong>model</strong> predicts that <strong>the</strong><br />

most promis<strong>in</strong>g reacti<strong>on</strong> for <strong>the</strong> producti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> super<strong>heavy</strong> <strong>nuclei</strong> is 208 Pb( 86 Kr,1n) 293 118, but<br />

<strong>the</strong> predicted cross secti<strong>on</strong> for this reacti<strong>on</strong> is c<strong>on</strong>siderably larger (670 pb) than <strong>the</strong> producti<strong>on</strong><br />

cross secti<strong>on</strong> obta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> Berkeley [10]. The <strong>model</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> fusi<strong>on</strong> based <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> DNS-c<strong>on</strong>cept predicts<br />

a producti<strong>on</strong> cross secti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> order <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 10 −2 pb [27] for this reacti<strong>on</strong>.<br />
