phenomenological double fold<strong>in</strong>g potential [65]. A discrepancy with <strong>the</strong> adiabatic potential is<br />

seen for small el<strong>on</strong>gati<strong>on</strong>s where <strong>the</strong> phenomenological potential is more repulsive than <strong>the</strong><br />

diabatic <strong>on</strong>e. The discrepancy becomes smaller if we take <strong>in</strong>to account a decrease <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> ε with<br />

decreas<strong>in</strong>g el<strong>on</strong>gati<strong>on</strong>. This is dem<strong>on</strong>strated for <strong>the</strong> system 110 Pd+ 110 Pd <strong>in</strong> Fig. 3-6, where <strong>the</strong><br />

diabatic potential is shown as a functi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> ε for c<strong>on</strong>stant values <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> λ. The m<strong>in</strong>imum <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong><br />

diabatic potential moves to smaller values <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> ε with decreas<strong>in</strong>g values <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> λ (or R).<br />

Fig. 3-6 shows diabatic potentials for <strong>the</strong> systems 96 Zr+ 96 Zr and 90 Zr+ 90 Zr as a functi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

ε for λ =1.54 near to <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>imum <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> pocket <strong>in</strong> λ. The diabatic c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong> is smaller as<br />

a functi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> ε for <strong>the</strong> 96 Zr+ 96 Zr system than for <strong>the</strong> 90 Zr+ 90 Zr system (lower part <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Fig. 3-7).<br />

The reas<strong>on</strong> for this can be seen through an analysis <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> s<strong>in</strong>gle particle spectra (Fig. 3-8).<br />

In <strong>the</strong> case <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 90 Zr+ 90 Zr, more diabatic levels with larger slopes cross <strong>the</strong> Fermi-level at larger<br />

values <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> ε. From Figs. 3-3 and 3-8 it follows that <strong>the</strong> diabatic c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong>s are larger with<br />

respect to <strong>the</strong> relative coord<strong>in</strong>ate than with respect to <strong>the</strong> neck coord<strong>in</strong>ate. This is expla<strong>in</strong>ed by<br />

<strong>the</strong> number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> cross<strong>in</strong>gs <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> diabatic states <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> variati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> both coord<strong>in</strong>ates. In most systems<br />
