Chapter 3<br />

The syn<strong>the</strong>sis <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> transuranium and super<strong>heavy</strong> elements ([4], [7], [8]), <strong>the</strong> producti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> superde-<br />

formed <strong>nuclei</strong> and <strong>nuclei</strong> far from <strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> stability stimulate <strong>the</strong> study <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> fusi<strong>on</strong> processes<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>heavy</strong> i<strong>on</strong> collisi<strong>on</strong>s at low energies (< 15 MeV/u). Exist<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>oretical <strong>model</strong>s can be<br />

dist<strong>in</strong>guished by <strong>the</strong> choice <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> relevant collective variables <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong> fusi<strong>on</strong> occurs. The<br />

relative distance between <strong>the</strong> centers <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>nuclei</strong> R (or el<strong>on</strong>gati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> system) and <strong>the</strong> neck degree<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> freedom play an essential role <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> macroscopic dynamical <strong>model</strong> (MDM) [16], which is<br />

based <strong>on</strong> an adiabatic approach to fusi<strong>on</strong>. Without regard<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> competiti<strong>on</strong> between complete<br />

fusi<strong>on</strong> and quasi-fissi<strong>on</strong>, this <strong>model</strong> overestimates <strong>the</strong> fusi<strong>on</strong> cross secti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>heavy</strong> <strong>nuclei</strong> [18].<br />

Attempts were made to improve this <strong>model</strong> by <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>rmal fluctuati<strong>on</strong>s and <strong>the</strong> competi-<br />

ti<strong>on</strong> between complete fusi<strong>on</strong> and quasifissi<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> [62], but an agreement with <strong>the</strong> experimental<br />

data was not achieved for <strong>the</strong> reacti<strong>on</strong>s treated <strong>in</strong> this study. Correcti<strong>on</strong>s to <strong>the</strong>se results could<br />

arise from nuclear structure effects <strong>in</strong> collisi<strong>on</strong>s with energies slightly above <strong>the</strong> Coulomb bar-<br />

rier. In a recent paper [42], <strong>the</strong> shell effects were <strong>in</strong>corporated by us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> two-center shell<br />

<strong>model</strong> (TCSM) [40]. The study <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> dynamics <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> fusi<strong>on</strong> with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> adiabatic TCSM overes-<br />

timates <strong>the</strong> fusi<strong>on</strong> probabilities for most symmetric and near symmetric reacti<strong>on</strong>s. Moreover,<br />

<strong>the</strong> isotopic dependence <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> fusi<strong>on</strong> probability resulted <strong>in</strong>correctly. Therefore, h<strong>in</strong>drances<br />

for <strong>the</strong> growth <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> neck and for <strong>the</strong> moti<strong>on</strong> to smaller values <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> R should be assumed to<br />

expla<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> experimental data. This h<strong>in</strong>drance allows <strong>the</strong> d<strong>in</strong>uclear system (DNS) to keep a<br />

relatively small neck over a time comparable with <strong>the</strong> reacti<strong>on</strong> time. Then <strong>the</strong> fusi<strong>on</strong> proceeds<br />

as a moti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> DNS <strong>in</strong> mass asymmetry. Such a h<strong>in</strong>drance <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> moti<strong>on</strong> to smaller R is<br />
