RULES AND REGULATIONS<br />

OF THE 8 TH INTERNATIONAL STANISŁAW MONIUSZKO<br />

VOCAL COMPETITION<br />

I. General Provisions<br />

1. The 8 th International Stanisław Moniuszko Vocal Competition hereinafter referred to as the<br />

“Competition” will take place at the Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera in Warsaw from 11 to<br />

17 May 2013.<br />

2. The Competition is organized by the Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera in cooperation<br />

with the Moniuszko Music Lovers’ Society.<br />

II. Rules and Conditions of Eligibility<br />

1. The Competition is open to singers of any nationality resident anywhere in the world and<br />

born not earlier than:<br />

– women: 10 May 1980<br />

– men: 10 May 1978<br />

and no later than 10 May 1995.<br />

2. To participate in the Competition candidates must submit an application form in accordance<br />

with section 4 below.<br />

3. Applications must be sent by email to moniuszkocompetition@teatrwielki.pl or by post to<br />

the following address :<br />

4. The application must include the following documents and an audio recording:<br />

a. Competition Application form, legibly completed and signed by the Candidate. Sample<br />

application form can be found in Appendix no.1 to the Rules and Regulations;<br />

b. audio recording of the Candidate performing, duration: 10-20 minutes, without cuts<br />

during the performance of a given piece. Please note that<br />

– recordings submitted by email must be in mp3 format<br />

– recordings submitted by post must be in CD format;<br />

c. scan or photocopy of an identity document;<br />

d. brief biography for use in the Competition programme book and press publications;<br />

e. two current 9x13 cm portrait photographs or a high resolution print-quality portrait<br />

photograph for use in the Competition programme book and press publications;<br />

f. signed Statement. Sample Statement can be found in Appendix no. 2 to the Rules and<br />

Regulations.<br />

5. In case of applications sent by email, Participants must submit the original copy of the<br />

Statement referred to in section 4(f) above or sign the Statement in the Competition Office<br />

after their arrival. Participants who fail to do so will not be allowed to enter the Competition.<br />

6. Candidates’ applications will be accepted until 15 January 2013. In case of applications<br />

submitted by post, the delivery date to the Organizer prevails. Incomplete or illegible<br />

applications will be rejected.<br />

Documents and recordings may be returned exclusively upon the Candidate’s clear written<br />

request submitted within 2 months of the Competition’s closure.<br />

7. Three-person Selection Panel will review the recordings and documents listed in section 4<br />

and decide which Candidates shall be admitted to the Competition.<br />

8. Candidates will be informed about the Selection Panel’s decision no later than on 1 March<br />

2013 by email or by a registered letter.<br />

9. The condition of participation in the Competition for selected Candidates is the payment of<br />

a registration fee in the amount of EUR 80 or PLN 320 no later than 15 March 2013.<br />

10. With the Candidates notified by the Organizer of the Competition about their admission<br />

to the Competition and with the registration fee paid by the Candidates, the Organizer<br />

of the Competition and the Candidate enter into agreement whereby the Candidate can<br />

participate in the Competition in accordance with these Rules and Regulations and gains<br />

the status of the Competition Participant (hereinafter referred to as the “Participant”).<br />

11. The Organizer of the Competition will provide and pay for accommodation for Participants<br />

during the following periods:<br />

a. for Participants of the 1 st stage of the Competition – between 10-13 May 2013,<br />

b. for Participants advancing to the 2 nd and 3 rd stage of the Competition – between 10-18<br />

May 2013.<br />

12. The Organizer of the Competition will reimburse travel costs incurred by Participants:<br />

a. up to the amount of PLN 600 for travel within the Republic of Poland,<br />

b. up to the amount of EUR 200 for travel from other European countries,<br />

c. up to the amount of EUR 400 for intercontinental travel.<br />

13. Travel costs, as outlined in section 12 above, shall be reimbursed upon receipt of tickets<br />

documenting Participant’s travel to the Competition. Tickets must be submitted to the<br />

Competition Office. Tickets paid in EUR will be reimbursed by the Organizer in EUR, and<br />

those paid in PLN will be reimbursed in PLN.<br />

14. The Organizer of the Competition will provide accompanists for all Participants. Participants<br />

can provide their own accompanist at their own expense – Participants should cover the<br />

accompanist’s fee, accommodation and travel.<br />

15. The Participant assigns to the Competition Organizer the related rights to the artistic<br />

performances during the Competition in accordance with the Statement as referred to in<br />

clause II, section 4(f) of the Rules and Regulations.<br />

16. The Organizer of the Competition is not obliged to insure the Participant against accidents<br />

and sickness. The Organizer is neither obliged to insure the Participant against luggage loss<br />

or damage.<br />

III. Competition Schedule<br />

1. The Schedule of the Competition is as follows:<br />

13-14 May 2013 2 nd stage<br />

16 May 2013 3 rd stage<br />

17 May 2013 Prizewinners’ Concert, Award Ceremony<br />

2. The 1 st and 2 nd stage of the Competition will take place in the Chamber Hall of the Teatr<br />

Wielki – Polish National Opera, the 3 rd stage in the Stanisław Moniuszko Auditorium.<br />

IV. The Programme of the Competition<br />

1. The Competition consists of the following stages:<br />

a. 1 st stage (with piano):<br />

– one opera aria from the 18 th century,<br />

– one song by Stanisław Moniuszko,<br />

– one song other than Polish from the 19 th or 20 th century<br />

b. 2 nd stage (with piano):<br />

– one opera aria from the 19 th century<br />

– one opera aria from the 20 th century<br />

– one Polish song from the 19 th or 20 th century<br />

c. 3 rd stage (with orchestra)<br />

– one Polish opera aria<br />

– one opera aria other than Polish, not performed in previous stages<br />

2. The programme performed should be selected from the Repertoire List (Appendix no. 3<br />

to the Rules and Regulations), but not exclusively. Participants may perform works not<br />

included in the Repertoire List provided they receive permission from the Director of the<br />

Competition.<br />

3. Performance time in the 1 st stage – up to 15 minutes<br />

Performance time in 2 nd stage – up to 20 minutes.<br />

The Jury has the right to interrupt the Participant’s performance should it exceed the above<br />

time limits.<br />

4. All works should be performed from memory.<br />

5. In each stage works may be performed in the Participant’s preferred order which should be<br />

indicated in the application form.<br />

6. Polish songs and arias may be sung in Polish or in any language selected by the Participant.<br />

7. Arias must be performed in original key.<br />

8. Songs may be transposed.<br />

9. The audition order shall be established before the start of the Competition by way of public<br />

draw. The order drawn shall be binding in all stages of the Competition.<br />

10. For organizational or programme reasons, the Director of the Competition has the right<br />

to make changes in the audition order during a given Competition day. In case of illness<br />

confirmed by the medical staff of the Competition, Participants may be given permission<br />

to postpone their performances to the end of auditions. New order established in this way<br />

shall be binding until the end of the Competition.<br />

11. The auditions during each stage of the Competition will be open to public.<br />

12. All stages of the Competition will be registered on audio or video carriers without any<br />

additional commercial gain for the Competition’s Participants.<br />

13. The Programme of the Prizewinners’ Concert shall be established by the Director of the<br />

Competition.<br />

V. Competition Jury and Awards<br />

1. The composition of the Jury shall be approved by the General Director of the Teatr Wielki –<br />

Polish National Opera in Warsaw.<br />

2. The Jury will debate and evaluate Participants in accordance with the Jury’s Statute.<br />

3. The Jury’s debates are confidential.<br />

4. Evaluations and decisions of the Jury are not subject to appeal.<br />

5. Combined points will be made available to public after the Competition has ended.<br />

6. The following prizes shall be awarded by the Jury:<br />

a. Female voice category:<br />

– 1 st Prize – EUR 10,000<br />

– 2 nd Prize – EUR 8,000<br />

– 3 rd Prize – EUR 6,000<br />

b. Male voice category:<br />

– 1 st Prize – EUR 10,000<br />

– 2 nd Prize – EUR 8,000<br />

– 3 rd Prize – EUR 6,000<br />

7. Jury reserves the right to make a different division of prizes from the one specified in section<br />

6 above with the provision that the total amount d<strong>esign</strong>ated for prizes shall not increase<br />

and the amount for each prize shall not be lower than amounts stipulated in these Rules<br />

and Regulations.<br />

8. Special Prizes in the Competition are:<br />

– Marcelina Sembrich-Kochańska Prize – for the best female voice<br />

– Jan and Edward Reszke Prize – for the best male voice<br />

– Jan Kiepura Prize – for the best performance of a Polish work<br />

– The Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera Management Prize– participation in an opera<br />

performance of the Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera preceded by a necessary<br />

rehearsal period<br />

– The Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera Management Prize on the 200 th anniversary of<br />

Giuseppe Verdi’s birth, for the best performance of an aria by Verdi – participation in an<br />

exceptional event: Verdi’s Gala at the Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera.<br />

– The Fryderyk Chopin Institute Prize – performance at the International Music Festival<br />

“Chopin and his Europe”.<br />

– Sinfonia Varsovia Orchestra Prize – performance with the Sinfonia Varsovia Orchestra<br />

9. Other special prizes might be awarded in the Competition (both monetary and nonmonetary)<br />

funded by various institutions and individuals. The list of these prizes and rules<br />

for their award procedure will be available to public before the start of the Competition.<br />

10. The Organizer of the Competition shall not be held responsible for failure on the part of the<br />

sponsors of the prizes as per section 8 above to fulfil their commitments regarding the said<br />

prizes properly and completely.<br />

11. Upon request of the Prizewinners of the Competition, monetary award can be converted<br />

into Polish currency (PLN) in accordance with the average exchange rate of the Polish<br />

National Bank (NBP) valid on the day of the payment.<br />

12. The income tax shall be deducted from the award amount should the Organizer be obliged<br />

to pay such a tax pursuant to current laws.<br />

13. The Prizewinners of the Competition are obliged to take part in the Prizewinners’ Concert<br />

in accordance with the Concert Programme. An unexcused absence is tantamount to the<br />

Prizewinner’s r<strong>esign</strong>ing from the prize.<br />

VII. Final provisions<br />

1. In all matters related to the Competition outside the Jury’s competence, final decisions are<br />

made by the Director of the Competition.<br />

2. These Rules and Regulations have been prepared in Polish and English, but any doubts<br />

concerning the provisions of these Rules and Regulations shall be resolved on the basis of<br />

the Polish text.<br />

3. In matters not governed by these Rules and Regulations the Polish law applies.<br />

4. Any potential conflicts shall be settled by the Polish Court of competent jurisdiction over the<br />

seat of the Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera.<br />

5. Appendices constitute an integral part of these Rules and Regulations.<br />

COMPETITION PARTICIPANT’S STATEMENT<br />

I, the undersigned, in connection with my participation in the 8 th International Stanisław Moniuszko<br />

Vocal Competition:<br />

1. declare that I have read the Rules and Regulations of the 8 th International Stanisław<br />

Moniuszko Vocal Competition, I accept the terms and conditions and undertake to abide by<br />

them,<br />

2. transfer gratuitously to the Organizer of the Competition, Teatr Wielki – Polish National<br />

Opera, all rights related to my artistic performances created as a result of my participation<br />

in the Competition, unlimited in time and space, in whole or in part, in all fields of use<br />

provided for in Article 86 of the Copyright and Related Rights Act, and particularly in respect<br />

of:<br />

a. recording and reproducing – production, using all possible techniques, including<br />

magnetic recording, photosensitive recording, audiovisual, digital, optical, printing, and<br />

computer techniques;<br />

b. the distribution of copies – release, lease, rent or loan.<br />

c. transmitting by visual or audio telephony, whether wire or wireless, by ground stations<br />

or satellites (both coded and uncoded signals), along with the right to retransmit on<br />

digital platforms and / or on cable networks;<br />

d. simultaneous and integral broadcasting (retransmission) by any other radio or television<br />

organization;<br />

e. the use of the artistic performance, in whole and / or in part, in films and / or works<br />

carried out with the use of technologies such as “real radio,” “internet radio”, “pay TV,”<br />

“pay-radio,” “pay-per-view services,” “multi-channel services,” “near on-demand services,”<br />

“video on demand,” “iTV on demand,” “video streaming,” “simulcasting,” “webcasting,”<br />

true tone, real music, polyphonic and monophonic ringtones, cardboard records,<br />

mobile-phone themes, soundtracks, collections, inserts, singles, mixtapes, promotional<br />

albums, multi-disc albums, wallpapers, icons, e-cards, screensavers for computers and<br />

mobiles, banners, thumbnails, pop ups, Internet TV and radio; computer games, video<br />

games, mobile, JAVA and console games, and use in telephone and ICT connections,<br />

including text and audiovisual messages (SMS, WAP, MMS);<br />

f. public performance or playback,<br />

g. the distribution of the performance and its copies in ways other than those specified<br />

above – transmission, retransmission and playback, including at venues with an entry<br />

fee, screening the performance, and making it publicly available in such a way that<br />

anybody can access it at a place and time of one’s choice; on the Internet, including<br />

Internet shops, and on other ICT, multimedia, and computer networks;<br />

h. the use of the performance, in whole or in part, also as part of collections with other<br />

tracks / artistic performances, and particularly in multimedia works;<br />

i. use in films or other audiovisual work,<br />

whereas the Organizer shall have the right to transfer acquired rights or consents obtained<br />

in whole or in part to third parties, including the co-production, performing, licensing or<br />

sub-licensing.<br />

3. I hereby irrevocably and gratuitously agree that my artistic performance, my image<br />

(including the photographs submitted to the Organizer) and / or my voice and my<br />

statements, along with my name and surname, if the Organizer deems it appropriate,<br />

recorded during the Competition on audiovisual and / or audio carrier, and / or in the form<br />

of photographs, can be used, in whole or in fragments, in all activities of the Organizer<br />

related to the Competition, including in particular any programmes created and / or<br />

broadcasted by the mass media such as television, press, the Internet, in the informational,<br />

promotional or advertising materials related to the Competition prepared by the Organizer.<br />

Such gratuitous consent (authorization) refers to multiple (unlimited in quantity, time and<br />

territory) use of my image, my voice and my statements in all fields of use mentioned in<br />

point 2 above.<br />

4. The Organizer shall have the sole right to decide about the time and manner my image,<br />

voice and my statements are used – in whole or in part,<br />

5. I agree to the processing of my personal data by the Organizer, unlimited in time, in<br />

particular through the collection, recording, storage, analysing, alteration, disclosure and<br />

disposal, as well as through other operations performed in relation to personal data in<br />

information systems for financial, statistical, archival and marketing purposes.<br />
