12 The Beginning of Life The light fell through the cold glass window Illuminating the pale, wooden floor A mouse stirred in a corner Yearning for more of that delicious ray It began its journey A baby coos in its crib a few rooms over The father, stout and burly, comes to comfort But it’s too late. The squeak penetrates the soothing melody of the crib Breaking the air of tranquility The father, enraged, grabs that hard, metal tool Like a jackal, stalking its prey, he leaps THWACK!
