NATURAL HAZARDS VULNERABILITY AND MANAGEMENT Construction Material Figure 14 Squatter settlements in many instances are among the areas most severely impacted during natural disasters. This is due not only to location of these settlements but also the nature of the material from which the majority of them are constructed. Figure 14 shows that sixty three percent (63%) of the units are constructed mainly from a combination of concrete and board followed by board with twenty percent (20%). Concrete only comprised fourteen percent (14%) of construction material. It should be noted that the construction material is linked to the material make-up of the walls of the house. 49
