Faculty and other researchers
What follows is a very concise, definitely non-exhaustive sum of the faculty's
research interests.
ANTHONY AGUIRRE (Physics)
Phone: 459-2449 Email: Aguirre@scipp.ucsc.edu
Heavy-element enrichment of the intergalactic medium. Inflation, eternal inflation
and "Multiverses"
GEORGE BLUMENTHAL
Office: 359 ISB Phone: 459-2005 Email: george@ucolick.org
Cosmological issues such as the role played by dark matter on the origin and
evolution of structure in the universe, the generation of primordial density
fluctuations and fluctuations in the CMB. Other areas of his research include
galaxy formation, gamma-ray bursts, accretion disks, and active galactic nuclei.
George is currently Acting Chancellor at UCSC and so his participation in the
Department this year will be limited.
PETER BODENHEIMER
Office: 335 ISB Phone: 459-2064 Email: peter@ucolick.org
Theoretical astrophysics with a focus on stellar systems. Among his main
interests are numerical calculations of stellar structure and evolution, formation
of giant planets, proto-star collapse, formation of stellar binaries and multiplets,
and the origin of planetary systems..
MICHAEL BOLTE
Office: 363 ISB Phone: 459-3896 Email: bolte@ucolick.org
UCO/Lick Director. Observation of old stellar populations in globular clusters and
measurements of the ages and chemical abundances of the individual stars.
Among other research interests are the dynamics of globular clusters, identifying
the main sequence critical mass for white dwarf formation, and extremely metal
poor (EMP) stars.
JEAN BRODIE
Office: 345 ISB Phone: 459-2987 Email: brodie@ucolick.org
Studies extra-galactic globular clusters systems, young massive star clusters,
and galaxy formation. Brodie also works on instrumentation for astronomy, such
as the development of a multi-object spectrograph.
