MITA ORGANIZATION
FFRROOMM TTHHEE PPRREESSIIDDEENNTT
USTA/Middle Illinois Tennis Participants and Supporters,
It has been an exciting year for MITA, and one of sadness too. I lost a close personal friend, and MITA lost one of its
most passionate tennis advocates with the passing of Rita Hertenstein November 12, 2011. She never quit promoting tennis;
she was even encouraging the nurses to take up tennis from her hospital bed!!! (Her BIO is below.)
Middle Illinois Tennis Association and Southern Illinois Tennis Association
will soon become
Mid-South Illinois Tennis Association!
The merger will be official January 1, 2013. By expanding boundaries, sharing our talent pool, and combining our
resources we will be able to reach players and communities that have been under served prior to this merger.
Patty Bramlet was hired as Executive Director for both districts starting January 1, 2012, and will continue in this
capacity after the merger. She was the SITA Executive Director before accepting this position.
A Special Thanks To:
Midwest Section for all their help and guidance during the merger process.
Ron Brooks for his many volunteer hours; without his advice and support this merger would have never taken place.
Joann Blair (District League Coordinator), for her willingness to work with the SITA Adult League Players before the
merger is official.
Vicki Schmidgall (Junior Program Director) and Bret Schrama (Tennis Service Representative), for their aggressive campaign
to introduce the USTA Junior Team Tennis programs to new communities and players in MITA.
Patty for providing a more professional delivery system. Take a look at the web page, it is updated on a regular basis, and
will have an exciting new look soon. www.middleillinois.usta.com
This merger will be a great opportunity for all the adult and junior tennis players in MITA and SITA. I ask that you show
your support of the Mid-South Tennis Association by volunteering to serve, or accept when asked to serve, to promote
and develop the game of tennis in our great district!
Norma Shook
MITA President
In Memory of Rita Ann Hertenstein
Rita is survived by her husband, Robert D. Hertenstein, MD, her son, Robert D. (Erika)
Hertenstein, and two grandchildren. Rita graduated from Pontiac High School and received her
RN from the OSF School of Nursing.
She was a dedicated member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and belonged to the
Altar and Rosary Society. She was a long time member of the Peoria Medical Auxiliary and
served as its president. She also served on the Board of Directors of the OSF College of Nursing and volunteered for
many years at Bel-Wood Nursing Home and the American Red Cross, both in Peoria.
She was one of the first MITA District League Coordinators, served on the MITA Board as a CTA Delegate, and volunteered
for many committees. She also captained many teams, competing in 4 National Championships and winning
two. She captained a team that will be represented MITA in Arizona on April 13th, 2012; the team will be playing in her
memory.
HOW 10 AND UNDER TENNIS
HAS CHANGED THE GAME
The more fun kids have by being able to rally right from the start, the more they will play and the
faster they will learn. This is the key to 10 and Under Tennis using the QuickStart Tennis play format.
Itʼs an exciting new way to learn and play tennis, designed specifically for kids. And itʼs the
new rule for USTA 10 and Under tournament play and Jr. Team Tennis.
Shorter, lighter racquets, slower and lower-bouncing balls, smaller court dimensions and modified
scoring are tailored to the age and size of the child. 10 and Under Tennis enables kids to begin playing
much sooner so they can learn the strategy and tactics of tennis while playing matches in a way
that is enjoyable and rewarding. 10 and Under Tennis is divided into two different levels for ages 8
and under and ages 9-10.
The majority of youth sports have followed this formula for years, from smaller bats for baseball to
shortened playing surfaces and smaller balls for basketball and soccer.
Now with 10 and Under Tennis, kids will have immediate success which leads to greater confidence,
more enthusiastic play and faster progress…all while having more fun! Get your kid in the game at
About USTA Jr. Team Tennis
UUSSTTAA JJUUNNIIOORR TTEEAAMM TTEENNNNIISS
USTA Jr. Team Tennis brings kids together in teams to play singles, doubles and mixed doubles against other
teams. It promotes social skills and important values by fostering a spirit of cooperation and unity, as well as
individual self-growth. Also, itʼs a fun environment for kids in which they learn that succeeding is really more
about how they play the game – win or lose.
How does it work?
USTA Jr. Team Tennis is designed for kids ages 5-18. They are immediately placed on teams. All you need to
start a league are two teams. Matches can be held anywhere from a local park or school to a commercial or
private club. Teams are preferably co-ed but can also be single gender (boys only or girls only). They are
divided by the following age and play levels:
Age Groups: U18, U16, U14, U12, U10 and U8 Play Levels: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced
TennisLink
All players have access to TennisLink, the USTAʼs online player registration system. TennisLink allows registered
players to keep track of their records and stats, as well as scout their competition. Whether on the court
or online, USTA Jr. Team Tennis builds a passion for a sport kids will be able to play for life.
Costs
The costs to participate can vary by local market. Minimum fees include costs for the official uniform, USTA
membership (if new member), plus nominal shipping and processing fees.
TENNIS ACHIEVEMENTS
CCOONNGGRRAATTUULLAATTIIOONNSS
Senior player Martha Downing has been a teaching pro and director at tennis clubs
in Sacramento for over 35 years, is a regular on the international cup teams, holds 27
Gold Balls, donates her time to charity tournaments and has been named USTA NorCal
Senior Player of the Year four different times.
Martha was first introduced to tennis when she was nine years old. She explains, "My
family moved next to a park in Decatur, Illinois – the only park in the area that had cloth
nets. My two older sisters and I could walk over and participate in the free lessons that
were being offered."
Martha reached a junior ranking of 15 in Girlʼs 16s and 28 in Girlʼs 18s, but no high
school team meant that she had to find alternative opportunities to play competitively. "I
mostly played on my own. I was able to travel on intersectional teams. At the time there was only one national
junior tournament and luckily for me it was in Illinois," she says.
Wanting warmer weather so that she could play tennis more often, Martha attended college at Stanford
University in 1967. After college Martha decided to turn her passion into a career. Her first teaching position
was as the Tennis Director at the Castilleja School in Palo Alto. Later, she was hired as the Tennis Director at
Millennium Sports Club El Dorado, where she remained for 19 years.
Marthaʼs senior NorCal record would make any competitive player envious; she has reached an Open #1
ranking in singles seven times and three times in doubles. Her USPTA rankings have been just as impressive,
reaching the #1 ranking in doubles five different times, once in singles and she was named USTA NorCal player
of the year four times. In 2009, she was inducted in the Sacramento Tennis Hall of Fame.
Despite her busy schedule, Martha always made time to give back to the sport that she loved by regularly
donating her time to benefit tournaments and worthy causes.
Western Michiganʼs head women's tennis coach Betsy Kuhle
recorded her historic 500th career victory on March 23, 2012. Kuhle is
just the second coach in the history of Western Michigan athletics to
reach 500 career wins, joining former baseball coach Fred Decker in the
exclusive club. Kuhle is one of just three active MAC coaches in any
sport to reach 500 career wins.
A 2006 inductee into the Western Michigan Athletic Hall of Fame,
Kuhle has long since established the womenʼs tennis program as not
only one of the top programs in the Mid-American Conference, but the region as well. The longest-tenured
coach at WMU in any sport, the 2011-12 season will mark the 30th year that Kuhle will guide the Bronco tennis
program. Kuhle also holds the MAC record with seven MAC Coach of the Year awards.
The programʼs academic success parallels the Broncosʼ success on the court. Twenty six of Kuhleʼs players
have been named to the MAC All-Academic team; eight have been named ITA/Volvo Scholar-Athletes; and
three were GTE Academic All-District choices. Kuhleʼs program has been honored as an ITA All-Academic team
12 years in a row and there has been a 98 percent graduation rate during the Kuhle era.
She has also served as coach at the United States Tennis Association Western Section 16-and-under Zonal
Championships in 1994, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006.
A native of Decatur, Illinois, Betsy began playing tennis before it was a varsity sport in high school. A 1976
graduate of the University of Illinois with a bachelorʼs degree in finance, Kuhle played No. 1 singles for the Illini.
She received a masterʼs degree in business administration from WMU in December of 1987. Kuhle captured the
1994 ITA 35-and-over title and ranked as high as fourth in the Western Tennis Associationʼs rankings. She also
served as the chairperson for the WTA Junior Wightman Cup Tournament.
Active in the profession, Kuhle is currently on the ITA Board of Directors and a member of the operating
committee. She was also chair of the ITA Midwest Regional committee from 1992-95 and 2000-03.
