Abstract
In this work, we consider an economic order quantity model
(EOQ) for items with imperfect quality under backorder policy. The
items are 100% inspected and screened out the imperfect quality in the
process. We extend a discount inventory model with backorder by
accounting for imperfect quality items. The objective of the paper is to
find the optimal policies; that is, the optimal ordered lot-size and
backorder for one-time-only discount.
Keywords: economic order quantity, imperfect quality, pure
backordering, one-time-only discount
1. Introduction
Economic order quantity (EOQ) is well known and useful in
practice. However, there are a lot of non realistic assumptions; many
researchers try to relax them. Salameh and Jaber [1] assumed that
defects may occur and could be sold in one batch after 100% screening
process finished. Maddah and Jaber [2] corrected model in [1] by
applying renewable theory. Besides Maddah and Jaber, many authors
also develop model in [1]. Khan et al. [3] has reviewed many works
related to [1]. Wee et al. [4] extended model in [1] by considering
backorder. The model in [4] was completed by Chang et al. [5] who
find exactly closed from of optimal order quantity and backorder. Hsu
et al. [6] extended model in [1] by allowing one-time-only discount. In
this work, we extend the model in [4] with addition of one-time-only
discount and backorder.
2. Notations and Assumptions
The notations used in this paper are as follows. Let K be the
fixed replace cost, D and x be the rate of demand and screening and
assume that x>D, c and s are the unit purchasing and screening costs. d
is the discount of purchasing cost per unit. h and b are the holding cost
and backordering cost rate per unit per unit time. Let p be the defective
percentage of each order, Qs and Bs be the order quantity and backorder
size when one-time-only discount occurs. q is the remaining object
( i )
( i )
when discount placed. NTcn and NTcs are the net total costs for
current policy that apply Wee’s model[4] and discount case
( i )
respectively, D be a saving for model i (without loss of generality
c>d)
We consider only a single product under infinite time
horizon. Demand and screening rate are assumed to be constant. The
defective percentage is fixed and constant. In addition, the
replenishment is instantaneous, and shortage is pure backordered.
