smaller tensions, for example between the nose, forehead, hat, hair, mustache,<br />

neck, collar, <strong>and</strong> shoulder. Air, or space circulates freely behind the head. There<br />

is a circular movement over Rembr<strong>and</strong>t's left shoulder, behind his head, over his<br />

right shoulder <strong>and</strong> over his chest. The figure is rounded <strong>and</strong> massive, yet<br />

integrated into the flat rectangle of the canvas.<br />

The painting embodies the dignity of the individual, in large part because<br />

of its formal gr<strong>and</strong>eur.<br />

In Van Gogh's portrait drawing <strong>and</strong> color create a lively effect. But, in<br />

terms of pictorial space, the figure is like a flat paper cutout stuck onto a canvas<br />

background. The position of the head makes no sense in terms of the dimensions<br />

of the rectangle. The forms do not move back <strong>and</strong> forth in relationship with each<br />
