The rear route number sign display<br />
area shall have no less than 161 flipdot<br />
pixels, having at least 7 rows and<br />
23 columns with a message display<br />
area of not less than 6.1 inches high<br />
by not less than 13.8 inches wide.<br />
The sign shall be capable of<br />
displaying 4 alphanumeric characters<br />
(1 through 9 and A through Z). The<br />
rear route number sign shall be<br />
located a minimum of 90 inches<br />
above ground on the curb side rear<br />
corner of the bus.<br />
Destination messages, route<br />
designations, and public relations<br />
messages shall be independently<br />
selectable via a single Operator's<br />
Control Panel (OCP) which shall<br />
include a display monitor. The rear<br />
route number sign shall be controlled<br />
by the same OCP that operates the<br />
destination signs. The OCP display<br />
monitor readout shall show the exact<br />
information displayed on the<br />
destination signs and route number<br />
sign. The OCP shall be conveniently<br />
located for the bus operator and<br />
mounted in such a manner that will<br />
not pose any safety hazard. The<br />
OCP shall utilize a durable<br />
weatherproof keypad with tactile<br />
feel for destination message control<br />
functions.<br />
The destination sign system shall be<br />
capable of programming 10,000<br />
message lines. The number of<br />
public relations messages shall be<br />
limited only by the remaining<br />
number of message lines not used<br />
for destination purposes. Sign<br />
displays shall have alternating<br />
message capability with<br />
programmable blanking time<br />
between message lines as may be<br />
required. Variable blanking times<br />
shall be programmable between 0.5<br />
display area of not less than 6.1 inches<br />
high by not less than 11 inches wide.<br />

The entire area of<br />
both signs shall be<br />
clearly visible in<br />
direct sunlight or<br />
at night.<br />
The front sign<br />
opening shall<br />
ac<strong>com</strong>modate<br />
entries with letters<br />
no less than 5<br />
inches high and<br />
shall ac<strong>com</strong>modate<br />
a message width<br />
no less than 50<br />
inches regardless<br />
of coach width.<br />
A side sign shall<br />
post the same<br />
message as the<br />
front sign with<br />
provisions for<br />
characters up to 4<br />
inches high.<br />
Provisions shall be<br />
made to mount the<br />
side sign anywhere<br />
along the coach<br />
sides with one<br />
location as far<br />
forward and as<br />
high as practicable.<br />
Regardless of<br />
location, the side<br />
sign shall be easily<br />
read from the<br />
sidewalk level.<br />
