5.4.5.2 PASSENGER ASSISTS<br />
5.4.5.2.1 General<br />

Passenger assists in the form of full grip, vertical stanchions or handholds shall be provided for the safety<br />
of standees and for ingress/egress. Passenger assists shall be convenient in location, shape, and size for<br />
both the 95th-percentile male and the 5th-percentile female standee. Starting from the entrance door and<br />
moving anywhere in the bus and out the exit door, a vertical assist shall be provided either as the vertical<br />
portion of seat back assist (see Section 5.4.5.1.3) or as a separate item so that a 5th-percentile female<br />
passenger may easily move from one assist to another using one hand and the other without losing<br />
support. Excluding those mounted on the seats and doors, the assists shall have a cross-sectional<br />
diameterbe between 1-1/4 and 1-1/2 inches in diameter or width or shall provide an equivalent gripping<br />
surface with no corner radii no less than 1/4 inch. All passenger assists shall permit a full hand grip with<br />
no less than 1-1/2 inches of knuckle clearance around the assist, except the assists mounted on the door<br />
panels which shall have no less than 1 inch of knuckle clearance. An impact resulting in a 1-foot<br />
intrusion shall not produce sharp edges, loose rails, or other potentially dangerous conditions associated<br />
with a lack of structural integrity of the assist. Any joints in the assist structure shall be underneath<br />
supporting brackets and securely clamped to prevent passengers from moving or twisting the assists (see<br />
Section 5.4.6.1.1 regarding bright surfaces and glare). All areas of the passenger assists that are handled<br />
by passengers including functional <strong>com</strong>ponents used as passenger assists shall be of anodized aluminum<br />
or stainless steel. Connecting tees and angles may be powder coated metal castings. Assists shall<br />
withstand a force of 300 pounds applied over a 12-inch lineal dimension in any direction normal to the<br />
assist without permanent visible deformation. Brackets, clamps, screw heads, and other fasteners used<br />
on the passenger assists shall be flush with the surface and free of rough edges.<br />
5.4.5.2.2 Front Doorway<br />
Front doors, or the entry area, shall be fitted with assists no less than 3/4-inch in width. Assists shall be<br />
as far outward as practicable, but shall be no farther than 6 inches from the outside edge of lower step<br />
tread and shall be easily grasped by a 5th-percentile female boarding from street level. Door assists shall<br />
be functionally continuous with the horizontal front passenger assist and the vertical assist on the front<br />
modesty panel.<br />
