life of the bus. Any insulation material used inside the engine <strong>com</strong>partment shall not absorb or retain<br />

oils or water and shall be protected or shielded from damage that may occur during maintenance<br />

operations. All insulation materials shall <strong>com</strong>ply with the Re<strong>com</strong>mended Fire Safety Practices defined<br />

in FTA Docket 90, dated October 20,1993.<br />

The <strong>com</strong>bination of inner and outer panels on the sides, roof, wheelwells and ends of the bus, and any<br />

material used between these panels shall provide a thermal insulation sufficient to meet the interior<br />

temperature requirements of Part 5: Technical Specifications. The bus body shall be thoroughly sealed<br />

so that the operator or passengers cannot feel drafts during normal operation s with the passenger doors<br />

closed.<br />

5.4.4.5 FLOOR COVERING<br />

The floor covering shall have be covered with a non-skid walking surface material that remains effective<br />

in all weather conditions and <strong>com</strong>plies with all ADA requirements. The floor covering, as well as<br />

transitions of flooring material to the main floor and to the stepwell area, shall be smooth and present no<br />

tripping hazards. The standee line shall be at least 2 inches wide and shall extend across the bus aisle in<br />

line with the operator's barrier. This line shall be the same color as the edge of the steps. Color shall be<br />

consistent throughout the floor covering. Color and material of the floor covering is defined in<br />

attachment to Part 5: Technical Specifications.<br />

The floor in the operator's <strong>com</strong>partment shall be easily cleaned and shall be arranged to prevent debris<br />

accumulation.<br />

A one-piece center strip shall extend from the rear seat between the aisle sides of transverse seats to the<br />

standee line. The covering between the center strip and the wheel housings may be separate pieces. At<br />

the rear door, however, a separate strip as wide as the door shall extend from the center strip to the top<br />

step.<br />

The floor under the seats shall be covered with smooth surface flooring material. The floor covering<br />

shall closely fit the sidewall cove or extend to the top of the cove.<br />

5.4.4.6 PASSENGER INTERIOR LIGHTING<br />

The interior lighting system shall provide a minimum 15 foot-candle illumination on a 1 square foot<br />

plane at an angle of 45 degrees from horizontal, centered 33 inches " inches above the floor and 24<br />

inches in front of the seat back at each seat position. Allowable average light level for the rear bench<br />

seats shall be 7 foot-candles. Floor surface in the aisles shall be a minimum of 10 foot-candles, vestibule<br />

area a minimum of 4 foot-candles with the front doors open and a minimum of 2 foot-candles with the<br />

front doors closed.<br />

The light source shall be located to minimize windshield glare with distribution of the light focused<br />

primarily on the passengers' reading plane while casting sufficient light onto the advertising display.<br />

Fluorescent tubes shall be a maximum 6-foot length, single-pin, T-12 type. (with exception granted for<br />

extinguishing or dimming fixtures as noted below)<br />

Lens material shall be clear polycarbonate. Lens shall be designed to effectively "mask" the fluorescent<br />

tube. Lens material shall not drip flaming onto seats if burned. Lens shall be sealed to inhibit incursion<br />
