5.4.3.12 EXTERIOR LIGHTING<br />
All exterior lights shall be sealed designed to prevent entry and accumulation of moisture or dust, and<br />
each lamp shall be replaceable in less than 5 minutes by a 2M mechanic helper. Commercially<br />
available LED (Light Emitting Diode)-type lamps shall be used wherever possible. Lights mounted on<br />
the engine <strong>com</strong>partment doors shall be protected from the impact shock of door opening and closing.<br />
Lamps, lenses and fixtures shall be interchangeable to the extent practicable. Lamps at the rear of the<br />
bus shall be visible from behind when the engine service doors are opened. Light lenses shall be<br />
designed and located to prevent damage when running the vehicle through an automatic bus washer.<br />
Lights located on the roof and sides (directionals) of the bus shall have protective shields or be of the<br />
flush mount type to protect the lens against minor impacts.<br />
Visible and audible warning shall inform following vehicles or pedestrians of reverse operation.<br />
Visible reverse operation warning shall conform to SAE <strong>Standard</strong> J593. Audible reverse operation<br />
warning shall conform to SAE Re<strong>com</strong>mended Practice J994 Type C or D.<br />
Lamps at the front and rear passenger doorways shall <strong>com</strong>ply with ADA requirements and shall<br />
activate only when the doors open and shall illuminate the street surface to a level of no less than 1<br />
foot-candle for a distance of 3 feet outward from the lowest step tread edge. The lights may be<br />
positioned above or below the lower daylight opening of the windows and shall be shielded to protect<br />
passengers' eyes from glare. Additional requirements for the illumination of doorways equipped with<br />
wheelchair elevators are defined in Section 5.4.5.4.2 of Part 5: Technical Specifications.<br />
Turn-signal lights shall be provided on both sides of the bus. Specific number and mounting<br />
requirements are defined in attachments to Part 5: Technical Specifications.<br />
5.4.4 INTERIOR PANELS AND FINISHES<br />
5.4.4.1 GENERAL<br />
Materials shall be selected on the basis of maintenance, durability, appearance, safety, flammability,<br />
and tactile qualities. Trim and attachment details shall be kept simple and unobtrusive. Materials shall<br />
be strong enough to resist everyday abuse and vandalism; they shall be resistant to scratches and<br />
markings. Interior trim shall be secured to avoid resonant vibrations under normal operational<br />
conditions.<br />
Interior surfaces more than 10 inches below the lower edge of the side windows or windshield shall be<br />
shaped so that objects placed on them fall to the floor when the coach is parked on a level surface. The<br />
entire interior shall be cleanable with a hose, using a liquid soap attachment. Water and soap should<br />
not normally be sprayed directly on the instrument and switch panels.<br />
