<strong>Standard</strong> <strong>Bus</strong> <strong>Procurement</strong> <strong>Guidelines</strong><br />

Bumper material shall be corrosion-resistant and withstand repeated impacts of the specified loads<br />

without sustaining damage. Visible surfaces shall be black or color -coordinated with the bus exterior.<br />

These bumper qualities shall be sustained throughout the service life of the bus.<br />

5.4.3.10 FINISH AND COLOR<br />

All exterior surfaces shall be smooth and free of wrinkles and dents. Exterior surfaces to be painted<br />

shall be properly prepared as required by the paint system supplier, prior to application of paint to<br />

assure a proper bond between the basic surface and successive coats of original paint for the service life<br />

of the bus. Drilled holes and cutouts in exterior surfaces shall be made prior to cleaning, priming and<br />

painting. The bus shall be <strong>com</strong>pletely painted prior to installation of exterior lights, windows, mirrors<br />

and other items which are applied to the exterior of the bus. Body filler materials may be used for<br />

surface dressing, but not for repair of damaged or improperly fitted panels.<br />

Paint shall be applied smoothly and evenly with the finished surface free of dirt and the following other<br />

imperfections:<br />

A. Blisters or bubbles appearing in the topcoat film.<br />

B. Chips, scratches, or gouges of the surface finish.<br />

C. Cracks in the paint film.<br />

D. Craters where paint failed to cover due to surface contamination.<br />

E. Overspray.<br />

F. Peeling.<br />

G. Runs or sags from excessive flow and failure to adhere uniformly to the surface.<br />

H. Chemical stains and water spots.<br />

To the degree consistent with industry standards for <strong>com</strong>mercial vehicle finishes, painted surfaces shall<br />

have gloss and be free of orange peel. All exterior finished surfaces shall be impervious to diesel fuel,<br />

gasoline and <strong>com</strong>mercial cleaning agents. Finished surfaces shall resist damage by controlled<br />

applications of <strong>com</strong>monly used graffiti-removing chemicals. Colors and paint schemes shall be in<br />

accordance with the attachments to Part 5: Technical Specifications.<br />

5.4.3.11 NUMBERING AND SIGNING<br />

Monograms, numbers and other special signing specified by the Procuring Agency shall be applied to<br />

the inside and outside of the bus as required. Signs shall be durable and fade-, chip-, and peel-resistant;<br />

they may be painted signs, decals, or pressure-sensitive appliqués. All decals shall be sealed with clear,<br />

waterproof sealant around all exposed edges if required by the decal supplier. Signs shall be provided<br />

in <strong>com</strong>pliance with the ADA requirements defined in 49 CFR Part, Subpart B, 38.27. The exact<br />

wording, size, color, and locations for these signs are found with requirements for other special signs in<br />

attachments to Part 5: Technical Specifications.<br />
