general information . general information . general information . general information . information A bit of history Vincent Pinson discovered French Guiana in January 1500. Later, in 1624, colonisation began in what is currently Cayenne. The 17 th century saw the French, English and Dutch successively colonise the area, each one motivated by the same desire: to find Eldorado. The French settled down definitively in French Guiana at the end of the 18 th century after attempts to populate the zone, the most well known being the Kourou expedition in 1763. However, the Europeans’ inability to adapt to working in a tropical environment and the impossibility to enslave the Amerindians led to the introduction of slavery in the colony. The black populations refused enslavement in 1848. Later, during the second half of the 19 th century, gold and prison were the main “activities” in French Guiana. On 14 th March 1946, French Guiana became a French Department. In the 60s, thanks to the installation of a space launch centre in Kourou, French Guiana opened up to new activities. history 8
general information . general information . general information . general information . amazonia French territory in the Amazon Around 7,000 km separate French Guiana from the French mainland, or eight and a half hours by plane. Situated in the north-east of the South American continent, French Guiana occupies 84,000 km 2 (1/5 th ) between Suriname and Brazil. On the west, its natural border is the Maroni river, on the east the Oyapock river, and in the south the Tumac-Humac mountains. 350 km of coastline border the Atlantic Ocean. Beyond that, the vast Amazonian rainforest begins, which can only be discovered by the rivers and waterways that form a dense hydrographical network. Climate French Guiana enjoys an equatorial climate: it’s hot, but bearable, especially as an antitrade wind blows permanently on the coast. The average yearly temperature is 26°C, with the maximum reaching 33°C. For sun worshippers, the best months to visit are: > mid July to end November: the great dry season, > mid March to mid April: “March summer”. For those that aren’t put off by a bit of rain (hot, with sunny spells): > January and February: short rainy season, but also Carnival time, > mid April to end June: rainy season (season when turtles lay eggs). In short, any time of year is great for visiting, and you don’t need to worry about a cyclone or earthquake, because there aren’t any here. 9
