Hiking trails
For those who love being in the middle of nature, hiking trails have been laid out
to provide a safe way of discovering the forest. Along the pathways, you can discover
the diversity of plant species that make up the natural environment, and you
can also spot a number of birds.
The Rorota trail
on the Mahury plateau
10 km from Cayenne on the beach road.
Type: path in a loop.
Distance: 4 km.
Site interests: typical coastal forest, remarkable
viewpoints of the coast and its beaches, 3 lakes.
Time required: 2 hours 30 minutes.
Level of difficulty: easy.
The Molokoï trail of Cacao
64 km from Cayenne.
Type : the longest signposted trail in French
Guiana in mountainous territory. Two departure
points possible
(Village of Cacao or River Orapu).
Distance: 18 km.
Site interests: a hike for real nature lovers, to enjoy
at a slow and silent pace to observe the fauna and
flora. Half-way there is a carbet refuge on the
edge of a waterfall: ideal for a well-earned break.
Time required: from Cacao 3 to 5 hours + 4 to
6 hours the following day. From the river Orapu
(Auberge des orpailleurs) 5 to 6 hours + 3 to
5 hours the following day.
Level of difficulty: this trail is for experienced and
informed hikers.
It is strongly advised to use the services of a
guide.
The Mirande trails in Matoury
14 km from Cayenne.
Type: 2 trails on primary forest hill (no human
exploitation).
- an interpretation trail that makes a loop.
- a walking trail.
Distance of interpretation trail: 2.8 km.
Distance of walking trail: 2.5 km.

with 24 illustrated signs: explanations
of the root system, the water cycle, climbers, etc.,
great specimens of hundred year old tropical
trees (ficus, silk cotton tree), presence of dendrobate
frogs, incredible views of Cayenne.

Time required for walking trail:1 hour 30 minutes.
Level of difficulty: athletic trails.
Montagne des Singes
50 km from Cayenne.
Type : 2 botanical paths cut across the mountain:
a hiking trail through different types of forest and
a small trail through secondary forest.
Distance of long trail: 3.2 km in a loop.
Distance of small trail: 700 m.
Site interests: presence of stations providing information
on plant species. From the crest, superb
view over the river estuary, the town of Kourou, the
Îles du Salut out at sea, and the Guiana Space
Centre facilities.
Time required for long trail: 2 hours.
Level of difficulty: athletic trail.
Time required for small trail: 30 min.

Saül trails
45min by plane from Cayenne.
Type : several trails through primary forest:
- “Roche Bateau” trail,
- “Gros Arbre” circuit,
- “Grand Bœuf Mort” circuit.
Site interests: these trails are ideal for discovering
plant species that are unique in the world, as well
as the largest tree identified in Guiana.
Time required: varies from 2 hours to 1 day.
Level of difficulty: these trails are for good walkers
who love untouched nature.
