For European Union citizens: a passport without visa and a return ticket. Health: Vaccination against yellow fever compulsory, no matter how long the stay, and anti-malaria treatment recommended if staying close to inhabited rivers. Language: French is the official language. Guianese Creole is the language used to communicate between different ethnic groups. English is understood. Money: Money: the currency is the euro. Credit cards and cheques are accepted in town (see boxed text below). Cheques issued at banks outside of French Guiana are accepted with difficulty. You can, however, use your credit card (Visa, Eurocard, Mastercard, American Express), either to withdraw cash or to pay for your purchases, accommodation, restaurants, car hire, but only in the main urban centres. Travellers Cheques are very useful. Note Time zone: G.M.T. -3 hours, so -4 hours with French mainland in winter, -5 hours in summer, and -1 hour with Martinique and Guadeloupe. Telephone: International automatic network. Ten number dialling: 05 94 + 6 digits. Use of mobile telephone possible with a World formula. Be warned that in areas far from the coast mobile telephones do not pick up. Dialling: 06 94 + 6 digits. • Power: the electrical current is 220 V. • Water: tap water is drinkable on the entire coastal area. • Shop opening times: in general, shops are open Monday to Friday, from 9 am to 12.30 pm and from 4 pm to 7 pm. Grocery stores and supermarkets stay open late in the evening (9.30 pm) and are open on Sunday from 9 am to 12.30 pm. • Public holidays: identical to those in metropolitan France, plus certain days specific to French Guiana: 10 th June (abolition of slavery), Jours Gras (February or early March). Useful information Clothes: We recommend light cotton clothes, a swimsuit, sunglasses and sun cream. For excursions, bring soft walking socks, a hat, a light raincoat, and a sweat-shirt for nights in the forest, which can be cool. Photos: The wonderful Guianese landscape will surely inspire you to take some beautiful photos. Climate conditions are particular, that’s why we recommend the following: • store film in an air-conditioned environment, • bring a waterproof or sealed case for pirogue excursions, • use a lens hood or polarising filters. Animal regulations: Importing live domestic animals is subject to regulations. Owners of cats and dogs must hold a certificate attesting to the animal’s good health, dating less than 15 days, and a valid vaccination certificate.

Phytosanitary Exporting of plants by individuals from French Guiana: imports into metropolitan France are authorised, regulations: with no particular phytosanitary formalities, according to French decree of 22/11/2002, article 28, section 2: “small quantities of plants, plant products, foodstuffs or animal food, intended for private use or to be consumed during transport (…)”. Note that derogations do not apply in the following cases: 1 - Prohibited plants (notably and mainly citrus fruit plants) 2 - Risk of introducing harmful organisms 3 - Genetic material 4 - Protected species (regulations concerning wild flora and fauna) Importations to Martinique and Guadeloupe are strictly forbidden by 2 decrees.
