Solar-Powered ClearWELL
Devices Drastically Reduce Paraffin
Problems and Associated Costs
Objectives
• Reduce considerable paraffin buildup in two wells and
associated flowlines, using a cost-effective method. Heavy
paraffin buildup in these shallow-water wells offshore
Louisiana forced the operator to use wireline to cut paraffin
twice weekly, periodically perform hot-oil jobs at a cost of
US$30,000 each, and frequently pig the flowlines.
• Slash expensive offshore maintenance costs associated
with wireline cutting, chemicals, hot-oiling, and flowline pigs.
• Eliminate the use of environmentally unfriendly chemicals.
• Operate the system with solar power.
Results
• A ClearWELL paraffin control device was installed in March
2006 on each well at the surface, without well intervention.
• To date, the ClearWELL devices, powered by solar panels,
have operated continuously, reducing paraffin buildup for
approximately 18 months, and they continue to provide
reliable paraffin control.
• Pig runs on the flowlines after the ClearWELL device
installations showed much less paraffin. As a result, twothirds
of the pig runs were eliminated.
• After installation of the ClearWELL devices, only 52 wireline
wax cuts were needed (as opposed to 184 cuts for the
previous year). Evaluation is ongoing to further lengthen the
intervals between wireline cuts.
• No hot-oil jobs have been needed to achieve the
unprecedented results.
• After installation of the ClearWELL devices, the operator
ended the continuous chemical treatment that had been
needed to maintain production.
The ClearWELL device is adaptable to oilfield
conduit ranging from 1 to 48 in. and can be
conveniently powered by an available standard
110V source or by solar energy, as it was for
these two wells.
Value to Client
• The significant reduction in wireline wax cuts, hot-oil jobs,
and pig runs saved the client an estimated US$367,748
per year.
• Solar power capability of the ClearWELL device provided
operational feasibility in an offshore environment.
The ClearWELL device induces a highfrequency
AC signal throughout the conduit
system of a well, regardless of the flow
direction, causing paraffin to precipitate in the
fluid flow and be carried away rather than
adhering to the walls of tubing, flowlines, and
pipelines.
This pig, pulled after a flowline run postinstallation
of the ClearWELL device, showed
considerably less paraffin than the operator had
expected.
