Maximum hospital benefit<br />
That point of hospitalization at which the patient’s progress appears to have stabilized and further hospitalization will<br />
not directly contribute to further substantial recovery. A patient who will continue to improve slowly over a long<br />
period of time without specific therapy or medical supervision or with only a moderate amount of treatment on an<br />
outpatient basis may be considered as having attained maximum hospital benefit.<br />
Medical care<br />
Unless otherwise specified, includes, but is not limited to the following:<br />
a. Inpatient treatment.<br />
b. Outpatient treatment.<br />
c. Nursing care.<br />
d. Medical examinations.<br />
e. Immunizations.<br />
f. Drugs.<br />
g. Subsistence.<br />
h. Transportation.<br />
i. Other adjuncts such as prosthetic devices, spectacles, hearing aids, and orthopedic footwear. This includes<br />
appliances such as braces, walking irons, and elastic stockings.<br />
Medical management<br />
The exercise of primary decision authority regarding diagnosis and treatment of an individual patient.<br />
Medical officers<br />
Commissioned officers of the armed forces or civilians who are either employees, consultants, or fee-for-service<br />
physicians.<br />
Member of a Uniformed Service<br />
A person appointed, enlisted, inducted, or called, ordered, or conscripted into a Uniformed Service who is serving on<br />
AD or ADT.<br />
Military patient<br />
A patient who is a member of the U.S. Armed Forces on AD or ADT or an AD member of the armed forces of a<br />
foreign government.<br />
Military treatment facility<br />
A facility established for the purpose of furnishing medical and/or dental care to eligible beneficiaries.<br />
Optimum hospital benefit<br />
The point during hospitalization when a patient’s fitness for further military service can be decided. Also, further<br />
treatment for a reasonable period in an MTF will probably not result in material change in the patient’s condition so as<br />
to alter type of disposition or amount of separation benefits.<br />
Outpatient<br />
A person receiving health service for a disease or injury that does not require admission to an MTF for inpatient care.<br />
Outpatient treatment record<br />
The OTR and the dental record of the beneficiary for whom an HREC is not kept.<br />
Outpatient visit<br />
A visit to a separate, organized clinic or specialty service. This visit is made by a patient who has not been admitted as<br />
an inpatient to the supporting hospital.<br />
Outside of the United States<br />
All areas outside of the 50 States and the District of Columbia.<br />
<strong>Patient</strong> Accounting and Reporting Realtime Tracking System<br />
An automated system that collects demographic and medical data of patients entering the medical system during a<br />
contingency operation. The patient is tracked through the entire episode of care until final disposition.<br />
