Glendining, in Eskdale, a fief claimed by <strong>the</strong> Armstrongs, a Keltic family, who<br />

were unruly as early as 1261, and allied to <strong>the</strong> Maxwells. Gavin Johnstoun<br />

<strong>of</strong> Elsieschellis assisted his Chief and <strong>the</strong> Laird <strong>of</strong> Dunwiddie. The case was<br />
