The <strong>Johnstones</strong> <strong>of</strong> Newbie bore in 1604 Three stars, and on a chief three<br />

In 1648 <strong>the</strong>ir Galabank descendants bore The saltire on <strong>the</strong> field, <strong>with</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> three cushions in chief. In 1772 <strong>the</strong>ir Arms were recorded Silver, a saltire<br />

wavy black, a red star in chief, a red rose in base, and two greeit garbs in <strong>the</strong><br />

winged spur<br />

flanks ; a red chief charged zvith three gold cushions. CREST :<br />

proper. MOTTO : " Nunquam non paratus."<br />

These Arms were again recorded<br />

1 87 1, <strong>the</strong> only difference being that <strong>the</strong> saltire has straight edges.<br />

The illegitimate <strong>Johnstones</strong> <strong>of</strong> Gretna bore A saltire between ttvo stars,<br />

wan armed cap-a-pie on horseback<br />

Silver, a black saltire ; on a red chief two gold wool packs (or cushions).<br />

JOHNSTON OF BEIRHOLM. Nisbet gives Silver, a saltire and chief red,<br />

<strong>the</strong> last charged <strong>with</strong> three gold cushions, all <strong>with</strong>in a silver bordure.<br />

JOHNSTON OF Warrieston. Burke's Armory gives Silver, a black engrailed<br />

saltire ; on a red chief three gold cushions.<br />

Johnston ok Johnson <strong>of</strong> Wroxel, Isle <strong>of</strong> Wight, claiming<br />

descent from Sheens, recorded in Lyon Office 1735 Silver, a black saltire, in<br />

JOHNSTON OF CASKIEBEN.<br />

At first this family bore Arms quite different to those borne by <strong>the</strong> South<br />

Country <strong>Johnstones</strong>. In 1550 <strong>the</strong>y bore A blue shield, charged <strong>with</strong> a bend<br />

between a stag's head erased in chief, and three cross cross/ets fitchy in base silver.<br />

In 1630 three stags heads erased appear in chief in place <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> one above<br />

mentioned.<br />

This family recorded Arms in 1695— 1 and 4—<strong>the</strong> Arms <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> South<br />

Country <strong>Johnstones</strong> Silver, a black saltire; on a red chief three gold cushions.<br />

2 and 3. Blue, a gold bend between three slags' heads erased silver, attired gold.
