HERALDRY OF THE JOHNSTONES<br />

The CREST was altered to A gold winged spur, and <strong>the</strong><br />

MOTTO adopted— " Nunquam non paratus."<br />

According to Robson's British Herald, <strong>the</strong> illegitimate Johnstons <strong>of</strong> Corehead<br />

and Lochhouse bore Silver, on a red itwecked saltire a gold spur, and on a<br />

red engrailed chief three gold cushions. CREST : A<br />

JOHNSTONS OF ELPHINSTONE.<br />

These Johnstons adhered to <strong>the</strong> original Arms A silver shield charged<br />

<strong>with</strong> a black saltire, and a black chief charged <strong>with</strong> three silver cushions ; but<br />

sometimes <strong>the</strong>y added a silver rose in <strong>the</strong> centre <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> saltire, and at o<strong>the</strong>rs<br />

quartered <strong>the</strong> Johnston Arms <strong>with</strong> those <strong>of</strong> Seton, Elphinstone, and Buchan.<br />

JOHNSTONES OF WESTERHALL, ALVA,<br />

AND HACKNESS.<br />

The <strong>Johnstones</strong> <strong>of</strong> Westerhall bore at first <strong>the</strong> same Arms as Annandale,<br />

but later <strong>the</strong>y adopted Silver, a black saltire, in base a red heart crowned<br />

gold, and a red chief charged zuith three gold cushions. The heart was added to<br />

commemorate <strong>the</strong> services <strong>of</strong> this family in defeating <strong>the</strong> Douglases in<br />

1455, <strong>the</strong> crowned heart being that <strong>of</strong> King Robert Bruce borne by <strong>the</strong> Good<br />

Sir James Douglas, at least part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> way, to <strong>the</strong> Holy Land, and a repre-<br />

gold winged spur.<br />

A sentation <strong>of</strong> it added to <strong>the</strong> Douglas Arms. CREST :<br />

MOTTO " : Nunquam non paratus."<br />

ALVA.<br />

The <strong>Johnstones</strong> <strong>of</strong> Alva add a black annulet or ring above <strong>the</strong> saltire in <strong>the</strong><br />

Westerhall Arms.<br />

One cadet <strong>of</strong> Alva adds a gold portcullis in <strong>the</strong> centre <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> saltire <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Alva Arms, and ano<strong>the</strong>r adds five silver fleurs-de-lis on <strong>the</strong> saltire.<br />

HACKNESS.<br />

Johnstone <strong>of</strong> Hackness, a cadet <strong>of</strong> Westerhall, and now Lord Derwent,<br />

bears— First and fourth quarters <strong>the</strong> Arms <strong>of</strong> Westerhall, quartered <strong>with</strong> those<br />

<strong>of</strong> Vanden Bempde in <strong>the</strong> second and third quarters. CREST : A gold winged<br />

spur. SUPPORTERS: Dexter, An ermine lion crowned gold ; Sinister, An ermine<br />

horse saddled and bridled red. Both Supporters charged on <strong>the</strong> shoulder <strong>with</strong> a<br />

non paratus."<br />
