was a partner in <strong>the</strong> firm <strong>of</strong> Johnston & Carlisle, and Chief Magistrate <strong>of</strong> Belfast<br />

in 1871. Philip's elder daughter, Hester, married <strong>the</strong> Rev. Francis Graham ; <strong>the</strong><br />

younger, Maude, married Edward Jenkins, author <strong>of</strong> Ginks's Baby. The sons,<br />

Samuel and David, are partners in a flax spinning mill.<br />

The grandsons <strong>of</strong> John Moore Johnston are : John Moore, died <strong>1909</strong> ; Philip<br />

Henry, LL.D., a Solicitor ; William Hope ; Robert Stewart, LL.B., Administrator<br />

in <strong>the</strong> Bahamas ; Alfred ; and two daughters—children <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> eldest son,<br />

John, by his wife, Lucinda Stewart. The issue <strong>of</strong> James, <strong>the</strong> second son, by<br />

his wife, Elean, daughter <strong>of</strong> Hugh Moore, are : John Moore, Hugh Moore,<br />

James Hope, William, Philip, and four daughters.<br />

One branch <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Kellobank and Beverley family settled in Ireland about<br />

1770, Captain William Johnston, who married a Hamilton <strong>of</strong> Tyrella (see p.<br />

132). Their son, <strong>the</strong> Rev. William Henry Johnston, M.A., incumbent <strong>of</strong> Holmpatrick,<br />

Co. Dublin (1770-1835), married Margaret, daughter <strong>of</strong> James Hamilton<br />

<strong>of</strong> Abbotstown and Holmpatrick (descended from <strong>the</strong> bro<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first Viscount<br />

Claneboye), and left William, fa<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> Mr William Henry Johnston<br />

<strong>of</strong> Ealing ; John <strong>of</strong> Hacketstown ; Henry, Rector <strong>of</strong> Ratoath ; and Charles,<br />

emigrated to Australia. The Rev. Henry Johnston married Emily, daughter <strong>of</strong><br />

Stuart Craufurd <strong>of</strong> Bath. Their elder son, Col. Henry Stuart Johnston, J. P.,<br />

late in command <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Royal Meath Militia, has two sons and two daughters.<br />

The second, William Stuart, left a daughter, Belinda, married Mr Pitman <strong>of</strong><br />

Bath.<br />

Colonel Percy Herbert Johnston, Medical Corps R.A., C.M.G. Son <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> late<br />

Surgeon-Major J. VV. Johnston. Married Agnes, daughter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> late General J. M.<br />

Perceval, C.B. Educated at Queen's College, Cork. Served in <strong>the</strong> Afghan War,<br />

1878-79; <strong>the</strong> Hazara Expedition ; and South Africa, 1899-1902.<br />

The first Johnston <strong>of</strong> Woodpark was George Johnston, a Solicitor at <strong>the</strong><br />

time he closed a mortgage upon Woodpark and took possession. A tradition<br />

asserts that he went over to <strong>the</strong> exiled King James at St. Germains. His<br />

descendant, Major Nicholas George Johnston, was forced to sell his property,<br />

part <strong>of</strong> which was bought by his bro<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>the</strong> Rev. John Beresford Johnston,<br />

whose descendants still hold it. Mr Johnston's eldest grandson, <strong>the</strong> Rev.<br />

E. A. Johnston, was appointed Vicar <strong>of</strong> St. Edmund's, Dudley, 1904.<br />

George Johnston <strong>of</strong> Co. Monaghan, being executor to <strong>the</strong> first Johnston<br />

<strong>of</strong> Woodpark was probably related to him. The latter died 1724. His<br />

third son, Gabriel, died in London s.p., 1752. His second son, Joshua, married,<br />

1718, Elizabeth, daughter <strong>of</strong> Lord Blayney, High Sheriff <strong>of</strong> Armagh, 1722.<br />

Their sons were: William George Cadwallader, Robert Joshua, Boulter, and<br />

Gabriel. William was Colonel in <strong>the</strong> 63rd Regiment, died 1795, leaving one<br />

daughter.<br />

A Johnston family, settled at Coshocton in Ohio, U.S.A., came from near<br />

Dungannon, Tyrone, in Ireland. Margaret, daughter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Rev. Joseph Kerr,<br />

and widow <strong>of</strong> David Johnston, brought <strong>the</strong>ir five children to Pittsburg in 1818.<br />

She married secondly, James Renfrew <strong>of</strong> Coshocton, where four <strong>of</strong> her children<br />

married into <strong>the</strong> family <strong>of</strong> Humrickhouse, who had braved <strong>the</strong> Indians <strong>the</strong>n
