College, London, student Royal Academy <strong>of</strong> Arts, 1876-80, and was medallist<br />

<strong>of</strong> South Kensington School <strong>of</strong> Art. He studied painting in France. He<br />

travelled in North Africa, 1879-80; explored Portuguese West Africa and<br />

River Congo, 1882-83 '> led a Royal Society Expedition to Mount Kilimanjaro,<br />

1884. H.M. Vice-Consul in Cameroons, 1885 ; Consul for Province <strong>of</strong> Mozam-<br />

bique, 1888; and founder <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> British Central Africa Protectorate 1889;<br />

Consul-General in Regency <strong>of</strong> Tunis, 1897-99; and Commander-in-Chief<br />

<strong>of</strong> Uganda Protectorate, 1899-1901. Has published essays on <strong>the</strong> "Tunisian<br />

Question," " Life <strong>of</strong> Livingstone," " River Congo," " <strong>History</strong> <strong>of</strong> a Slave," " The<br />

Nile Quest," " The Uganda Protectorate," " The Colonization <strong>of</strong> Africa by Alien<br />

Races," and o<strong>the</strong>rs. He lives at St. John's Priory, Poling, Arundel.<br />

James William Douglas Johnstone, late Inspector-General <strong>of</strong> Education,<br />

Gwalior State, Central India, born at Murree, Punjab, 1855. Son <strong>of</strong> late<br />

Major-General Henry Campbell Johnstone, C.B., <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Indian Staff Corps.<br />

Educated at Edinburgh Academy and University. Principal <strong>of</strong> Daly College,<br />

Indore, 1855, and lent by Government <strong>of</strong> India to Gwalior State as tutor<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Maharajah Scindia, 1890. Besides o<strong>the</strong>r posts, he was employed on<br />

famine duty in 1897 ar>d 1900; and accompanied <strong>the</strong> Maharajah to England<br />

in 1902 to attend King Edward's Coronation.<br />

Colonel Francis Buchanan Johnstone, D.S.O., born 1863. Son <strong>of</strong> David<br />

Johnstone <strong>of</strong> Croy, Row, Dumbarton. Married, 1887, Edith Arethusa Padwick.<br />

Entered <strong>the</strong> Royal Artillery in 1882, and served in South Africa.<br />

Rev. J. O. Johnston, M.A., Vicar <strong>of</strong> Cuddesdon and Principal <strong>of</strong> Cuddesdon<br />

College, born at Barnstaple 1852. Son <strong>of</strong> Rev. G. Johnston and his wife,<br />

Elizabeth Morgan. Educated at Barnstaple Grammar School and Keble College,<br />

Oxon. Author <strong>of</strong> Life and Letters <strong>of</strong> H. P. Liddon, D.D., and o<strong>the</strong>r works.<br />

Rev. Hugh William Johnston, Rector <strong>of</strong> North Cray, Hon. Canon <strong>of</strong><br />

Canterbury, head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Irish family <strong>of</strong> Redemon. His daughter married Dr<br />

Ridgeway, Lord Bishop <strong>of</strong> Chichester.<br />

Alderman Charles Johnston, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> City <strong>of</strong> London.<br />

John Lawson Johnston was in business in Edinburgh in early life, and<br />

afterwards removed to London, where he acquired a fortune from a useful<br />

invention. He rented Inverary Castle after <strong>the</strong> death <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> late Duke. His<br />

son, George Lawson, married, in 1902, a daughter <strong>of</strong> Lord St. John <strong>of</strong> Bletsoe.<br />

George Hope Johnston, fourth son <strong>of</strong> Francis Johnston <strong>of</strong> Handsworth,<br />

Staffs., born 1841. Married, 1867, Emily Wilkinson. J.P., Staffs.<br />

Among many eminent ministers, <strong>the</strong> Rev. David Johnston, born 1734,<br />

must be noted. Appointed to North Leith in 1765, and made a D.D. <strong>of</strong><br />

Edinburgh in 1781. He was <strong>the</strong> founder <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Blind Asylum in Edinburgh<br />

in J 793> an d was appointed Chaplain in Ordinary to George III. in <strong>Scotland</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> same year. At <strong>the</strong> request <strong>of</strong> a sailor's wife he wrote to Napoleon and<br />

asked him to release her husband, <strong>the</strong>n a prisoner in France. Dr Johnston<br />

received an answer from Talleyrand that <strong>the</strong> request was granted and <strong>the</strong><br />

man would be sent home. One <strong>of</strong> Campbell's poems is founded on this incident.<br />

The handsome group <strong>of</strong> cottages in Johnstone Park, Dumfries, was built by
