<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir children and grandchildren, appear in Edinburgh records to <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> seventeenth century and later, when <strong>the</strong>y seem to have become extinct in <strong>the</strong><br />

male line. David Johnstone <strong>of</strong> Newbie, <strong>the</strong> merchant, Archibald's " faithful<br />

friend," appears to have married a third time, and died very old in June 1644.<br />

His daughter Geillis, wife to a Johnston <strong>of</strong> Elsieshields, died Oct. 1643. He<br />

had bought land in Preston and Galloway, and left descendants. In 1640 he<br />

lent money to <strong>the</strong> Laird, <strong>the</strong> bond being signed by his " nevoy " John, a writer.<br />

Gilbert Johnstone <strong>of</strong> Graitney, <strong>the</strong> merchant, left John (and probably o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

sons), in Edinburgh, 1620.<br />

Agnes Johnstone, wife <strong>of</strong> Patrick Spens, was returned sole heir to her<br />

bro<strong>the</strong>r, Robert, <strong>the</strong> historian and donator to Heriot's Hospital.
