XV. Mary Cecilia (twin <strong>with</strong> Jemima), married, May 17, 1837, <strong>the</strong> Hon.<br />

Lawrence Harman King-Harman, second son <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Earl <strong>of</strong> Kingston. He<br />

assumed <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> Harman on succeeding to his grandmo<strong>the</strong>r's (<strong>the</strong> Countess<br />

<strong>of</strong> Rosse) estate <strong>of</strong> Newcastle, Co. Longford. She died Jan. II, 1904, leaving<br />

issue.<br />

XVI. Charlotte Octavia, married, first, May 1845, James Harrison<br />

Cholmeley, Major, 8th Hussars; died s.p. 1854. She married, secondly, Oct.<br />

9, 1867, Francis Bernard Pigott <strong>of</strong> Eagle Hill ; died 1875. She died March 26,<br />

1898.<br />

Mr Johnstone <strong>of</strong> Alva died April 7, 1830, and was succeeded by his son,<br />

James, in Alva and Hangingshaw, born July 4, 1801, J. P. and D.L. <strong>of</strong> Clackmannan,<br />

Stirling, and Selkirk, M.P. for Clackmannan and Kinross from 185 1<br />

to 1857. Married, first, Jan. 9, 1846, <strong>the</strong> Hon. Augusta Anne Norton, daughter<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hon. Fletcher Norton, Baron <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Exchequer in <strong>Scotland</strong> and sister<br />

<strong>of</strong> Fletcher, third Lord Grantley. She died 1859, leaving<br />

(1) John Augustus James <strong>of</strong> Alva, born 1847 ; died sp. 1890.<br />

(2) Caroline Elizabeth Mary, now <strong>of</strong> Alva.<br />

He married, secondly, May 5, 1862, Sarah Mary, daughter <strong>of</strong> Lieutenant-<br />

Colonel L'Estrange <strong>of</strong> Moystown, King's County. The British residents in<br />

Brussels in 1861 recollect <strong>the</strong> keen competition between Mr Johnstone and<br />

a foreign Royal Prince for Miss L'Estrange's hand. The children <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> second<br />

marriage were<br />

(3) James Henry L'Estrange, M.V.O., Major R.E., <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hangingshaw,<br />

Selkirk, J. P., Order <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Osmanleh, President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Egyptian Railway<br />

Board, born Aug. 8, 1865 ; died 1906. He married, 1891, Amy Octavia,<br />

youngest daughter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> late Andrew Wauchope, and had— 1, John Andrew<br />

born May 1893, heir to his aunt ; 2, Henry James, born 1895 ! 3» Andrew<br />

Wauchope, born 1903.<br />

(4) Henry Beresford, B.A., Oxon., born Jan. 26, 1871, Vice-Consul at<br />

Addis Aluba, late Assistant Collector, Rabai, East Africa.<br />

(5) Gilbert Lumley, late Lieutenant R.F.A., Sub- Inspector Hausa Force,<br />

Africa, born April 16, 1872. Married, 1907, Florence, daughter <strong>of</strong> A. Fincham.<br />

Mr Johnstone died Feb. 24, 1888. The eldest son, John Augustus James<br />

Johnstone <strong>of</strong> Alva, Co. Stirling, J. P., born May 3, 1847, married, May 1868,<br />

Emily, daughter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> late R. W. Crossling. He died s.p. April 1, 1890,<br />

and was succeeded in Alva by his sister, Caroline Elizabeth.<br />

The Vanden-Bempde <strong>Johnstones</strong> <strong>of</strong> Hackness Hall, represented by Lord<br />

Derwent (Sir Harcourt Johnstone), descend from John, second son <strong>of</strong> Sir<br />

William Johnstone, second Baronet <strong>of</strong> Westerhall, by his marriage <strong>with</strong> Char-<br />

lotta, Marchioness <strong>of</strong> Annandale. Their two sons — Richard (created a<br />

Baronet), an M.P. in <strong>the</strong> Irish Parliament, and Charles, <strong>of</strong> Pembroke and<br />

Ludlow—have been described. The Marchioness spent <strong>the</strong> last few years <strong>of</strong><br />

her life <strong>with</strong> her daughter, Charlotte Henrietta, at Turnham Green, Chiswick,<br />

to be near her unfortunate son, and he was <strong>of</strong>ten well enough to stay in <strong>the</strong><br />

same house. She lived quietly from choice, but it was no isolation. Sir
