little later Lord Leigh alluded to him, at a meeting, as a great and public<br />

loss.<br />

" I have never known," wrote his fa<strong>the</strong>r-in-law (Mr Sampson Lloyd),<br />

" any one who combined so many noble traits <strong>of</strong> character, <strong>the</strong> deeply sincere,<br />

though unpretending Christian believer, <strong>the</strong> brave soldier, <strong>the</strong> man <strong>of</strong> highest<br />

honour in all things, <strong>the</strong> useful magistrate and public man, <strong>the</strong> kind, true friend.<br />

His loss can <strong>of</strong> course never be replaced in this world. Happily he was<br />

especially fitted for a sudden call— if that had to be." His children were:<br />

I. James, died 1873.<br />

II. Richard, now <strong>of</strong> Fulford Hall and Dunsley Manor, born at Sama-<br />

gooting, Assam, June 1874, educated at Winchester College and Trinity<br />

College, Glenalmond, Captain in <strong>the</strong> 1st Battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps,<br />

was in <strong>the</strong> Chitral campaign, and severely wounded at <strong>the</strong> battle <strong>of</strong> Talana<br />

Hill, South Africa, also in <strong>the</strong> besieged Ladysmith. He married Catharine<br />

Florence May, daughter <strong>of</strong> Admiral Sir Robert Harris, K.C.B., and has a son,<br />

James, and two daughters.<br />

III. Edward, born 1875, served in <strong>the</strong> Imperial Yeomanry and <strong>the</strong> South<br />

African Constabulary during <strong>the</strong> Boer War.<br />

IV. Arthur, died 1879.<br />

V. Emma Mary.<br />

The bro<strong>the</strong>rs and sisters <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> late Major-General Sir James Johnstone :<br />

I. Edward, settled in Canada, born 1842. Married and has issue.<br />

II. Charles, Vice-Admiral (retired), <strong>of</strong> Graitney, Co. Surrey, born 1843.<br />

Married Janet Schonswar, only child <strong>of</strong> George Schonswar, and has (1) George,<br />

Lieutenant, R.N. ; (2) Janet Schonswar ; (3) Mildred Elizabeth Dryad Schonswar<br />

; (4) Cicely Ca<strong>the</strong>rine Schonswar; (5) Frances Lucy Schonswar; (6) Winifred<br />

Barbara Schonswar.<br />

III. Richard, M.A. (Trinity College, Cambridge), late Rector <strong>of</strong> Moreton<br />

Sey, Stone, and Yoxall, born 1845 ; died 1894. Married Imogen Isabella<br />

Twysden, daughter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> late Walter Hele Molesworth, barrister-at-law. Left<br />

(1) Andrew, Lieutenant, R.N.; (2) William ; (3) John ; (4) Hugh ; (5) Edmund,<br />

R.N. ; (6) Richard Michael ; (7) Delicia Mary, married F. Fox, Co. Devon ;<br />

(8) Frances Benetta.<br />

IV. Thomas, died in India.<br />

V. Maria Mary Payne, married Theodore Rathbone, J. P. (late <strong>of</strong> Inniskilling<br />

Dragoons), <strong>of</strong> Backwood, Co. Cheshire, who died 1890. Left Mary,<br />

now <strong>of</strong> Backwood.<br />

VI. Elizabeth.<br />

VII. Ca<strong>the</strong>rine Laura.<br />

VIII. Janet Emma, married Rev. F. Bigg, M.A. Has four sons and five<br />

daughters. The eldest daughter, Maria Mary, married to Rear-Admiral F.<br />

Stopford.<br />

IX. Fanny Matilda, died in India, married <strong>the</strong> late Horace Boileau Goad <strong>of</strong><br />

Simla. Left Lockhart, Deputy - Superintendent <strong>of</strong> North - West Provinces<br />

Police, India, and five o<strong>the</strong>r children.
