bro<strong>the</strong>r, John, a merchant in Edinburgh, who owned a house in Lochmabengait,<br />

Dumfries, in 1576. He was M.P. for Edinburgh in 1581 when Robert was M.P.<br />

for Dumfriesshire ; and he was one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> witnesses to his Chief's retour in 1588.<br />

Robert <strong>of</strong> Nevvbie is mentioned by <strong>the</strong> English Warden as son-in-law to<br />

<strong>the</strong> murdered Carmichael. His wife must have been <strong>the</strong> Dame Sara Carmichael,<br />

Lady Johnstoun, 1 who was cautioner for John Johnstoun <strong>of</strong> Graitney<br />

in a debt to Edward Johnstoun, younger, in 1606 ; and <strong>the</strong>y had two sons,<br />

William and Edward, and a daughter, Elizabeth. John <strong>of</strong> Newbie, <strong>the</strong><br />

merchant, married Janet Hunter, <strong>of</strong> a family represented by <strong>the</strong> Hunter-<br />

Arundells, Co. Dumfries. 2<br />

In 1599 and 1600 John was a Baillie <strong>of</strong> Edinburgh.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> probate <strong>of</strong> his Will in 1601 he is described as callit <strong>of</strong> Newbie, merchant<br />

burgess <strong>of</strong> Edinburgh. Besides his bro<strong>the</strong>r, David, and his relatives, Edward<br />

and Gilbert Johnstoun, he was associated in business <strong>with</strong> some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> merchant<br />

princes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> day—Archibald Johnstoun (Chapter V.), whose wife was a<br />

daughter <strong>of</strong> Sir John Arnot, <strong>the</strong> Lord Provost ; and Nicol Udward, sometime<br />

<strong>the</strong> Lord Provost, and <strong>the</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> Barbara, Edward <strong>of</strong> Ryehill's second<br />

wife. Both Udward and Arnot were connected by marriage <strong>with</strong> James<br />

Primrose, 3 <strong>the</strong> Clerk <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Privy Council, <strong>the</strong> ancestor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Earl <strong>of</strong> Rosebery,<br />

and were declared by a decreet <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Privy Council to have had no share in <strong>the</strong><br />

Gowrie plot.<br />

John's Will is a long one, and every Laird's family in Dumfriesshire is repre-<br />

sented among his debtors. The Laird <strong>of</strong> Johnstoun owed him £37, 17s. 1 id. ;<br />

Lady Margaret Scott, <strong>the</strong> Laird's mo<strong>the</strong>r, £288, is. 7d. ; Carru<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>of</strong><br />

Holmains .£317, 8s. 5d. ; Johnstoun <strong>of</strong> Westraw, in two sums, £57, 6s. iod. ;<br />

and Westraw's security, Gilbert Johnstoun (Wamfray), £111 (Gilbert was<br />

also security for Lady Johnstoun, and owed on her behalf ,£251, is. 8d) ; James<br />

free <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Burgh" <strong>with</strong> <strong>the</strong> usual fees, Symon Johnstoun being his surety. No stranger<br />

could settle <strong>with</strong>out leave in <strong>the</strong> Burgh.<br />

3 Archibald Primrose, his son, wished to buy land in Annandale, but <strong>the</strong> old landowners<br />

combined to prevent it.
