3. Evaluation of L<strong>in</strong>k Annotation for Navigation Support<br />

With the system under development, we are conduct<strong>in</strong>g an empirical study to see whether the l<strong>in</strong>k annotation<br />

is effective <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g learn<strong>in</strong>g outcomes. This is be<strong>in</strong>g done by disabl<strong>in</strong>g the adaptive navigation support<br />

for a random half of the students for the first part of the course, then enabl<strong>in</strong>g it for the second, and vice-versa.<br />

We are us<strong>in</strong>g audit trails and the results of the onl<strong>in</strong>e tests for both the <strong>format</strong>ive and summative evaluation.<br />

The presentation of this paper at WebNet96 [HREF4] will focus on the development of the system and report<br />

early results from the empirical study.<br />
