It can also happen that these documents have been analysed or simply quoted <strong>in</strong> one of the essays of the<br />

VENIVA editorial collection. In this case, readers can follow the l<strong>in</strong>k from the primary document they are<br />

view<strong>in</strong>g to the critical analyses that relate to it.<br />

- The authorial environment. Users can be more <strong>in</strong>teractive with the materials stored <strong>in</strong> the VENIVA database.<br />

They will not only browse the documents, read them or follow the connections that are automatically created by<br />

the system and the l<strong>in</strong>ks that the authors of the publications have established; but, <strong>in</strong> the open environment,<br />

users can be authors, too.<br />

The researcher will connect to the VENIVA platform <strong>in</strong> order to exam<strong>in</strong>e the materials he can not otherwise<br />

access, unless he physically visits the archive or library that preserves them. In particular, he will be able to<br />

search for archival and bibliographic documents, extract <strong>in</strong><strong>format</strong>ion from the publications he has read or the<br />

primary materials he has viewed, elaborate them, create l<strong>in</strong>ks establish<strong>in</strong>g hotwords, add new text and images,<br />

save his own work and search results on a personal folder on his desktop, and eventually submit his work to an<br />

editorial committee for publication.<br />

The private environment<br />

The ma<strong>in</strong> tasks of the publisher —i.e. the subject that offers editorial services with added value <strong>in</strong> the open<br />

environment— can be thus considered. On the one hand, the publisher is <strong>in</strong> direct contact with both the reader<br />

and the researcher that enter the VENIVA archive. On the other, the publisher will communicate with the<br />

cultural repositories of primary <strong>in</strong><strong>format</strong>ion —i.e. archives and libraries. If they wish so, the publisher can<br />

adm<strong>in</strong>istrate for them the f<strong>in</strong>ancial exploitation of their materials. F<strong>in</strong>ally, the publisher will control the virtual<br />

archive and its automatic updat<strong>in</strong>g of data.<br />

Users can also prepare a project for a possible editorial publication and ask the publisher to produce it for them.<br />

They know the ma<strong>in</strong> characteristics of the editorial product they wish to buy and can provide precise directions<br />

for the publisher. In this sense, users will ask for a personalised product, choos<strong>in</strong>g between different levels of<br />

editorial ref<strong>in</strong>ement or different supports (electronic or traditional). The publisher will fulfil their requests and<br />

will submit their work to the editorial committee that will decide upon the feasibility of its publication on-l<strong>in</strong>e.<br />
