document when accessed. This allows for fully transparent use of watermarked or non-watermarked images with<strong>in</strong> the<br />

hypermedia system. The image process<strong>in</strong>g part of the system semi-randomly alters and degrades portions of the images'<br />

colour and contrast, as dictated by a 1-bit image overlay.<br />

Summary<br />

Whether visible or <strong>in</strong>visible watermarks are used depends on the requirements of the local <strong>in</strong>stallation. Us<strong>in</strong>g visible<br />

watermarks proved to be sufficient for our application with a public <strong>in</strong>stitution like the Museum of New Zealand. It<br />

provides enough flexibility for further extension and a grow<strong>in</strong>g collection of images. Its access mechanisms make the<br />

HyperWave system an ideal basis for storage of both watermarked and non-watermaked images.<br />
