The National In<strong>format</strong>ics Center has put up a web page (http://www.nic.<strong>in</strong>/) describ<strong>in</strong>g its program of state-ofart<br />

solutions to the <strong>in</strong><strong>format</strong>ion management and decision support requirements of the Government and the<br />

Corporate sector, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g conduct<strong>in</strong>g feasibility studies for computerization and design<strong>in</strong>g, develop<strong>in</strong>g, and<br />

implement<strong>in</strong>g computer-based <strong>in</strong><strong>format</strong>ion systems.<br />

Besides <strong>in</strong><strong>format</strong>ion about the ERNET program, the ERNET page offers news from India, updates on Indian<br />

cyberspace, and l<strong>in</strong>ks to Indian web pages, for <strong>in</strong>stance, the Unesco-India Home Page<br />

(http://www.doe,ernet.<strong>in</strong>/~unicefd/) describ<strong>in</strong>g the Indian Unicef program. Universities and research<br />

<strong>in</strong>stitutions that have access to ERNET have built home pages describ<strong>in</strong>g their programs and resources.. One<br />

good example is the IISc <strong>in</strong> Bangalore (http://ece.iisc.ernet.<strong>in</strong>/iisc.html). View from the Ground<br />

(http://ece.iisc.ernet.<strong>in</strong>/monster/atul/<strong>in</strong>dianet/) offers an irreverent description of the development of the<br />

Internet <strong>in</strong> India, l<strong>in</strong>ks to current articles about the Indian comput<strong>in</strong>g scene, and free software for Indian<br />

Internet users. Indiagate (http://www.<strong>in</strong>diagate.com/bbs/bbslist.html) gives a complete list of Indian BBSs with<br />

<strong>in</strong>structions on how to sign up, and an article describ<strong>in</strong>g the "typical" Indian BBS user.<br />

Gopher<br />

Gopher technology has been around longer than the web and some universities have developed very extensive<br />

gopher sites. For India one of the oldest, best-known, and most useful is the South Asia Gopher<br />

(gopher://gopher.cc.columbia.edu:71/11/clioplus/scholarly/SouthAsia/). The South Asia Gopher is collection of<br />

world-wide network accessible <strong>in</strong><strong>format</strong>ion resources relat<strong>in</strong>g to South Asia. It <strong>in</strong>cludes direct l<strong>in</strong>ks to onl<strong>in</strong>e<br />

catalogs of the world's top library collections on South Asia; lists of South Asia related newsgroups, listservs,<br />

BBSs, organizations, societies and other NGOs; and the International directory of South Asia Scholars. A web<br />

version of the South Asia Gopher is be<strong>in</strong>g developed.<br />

Newsgroups and Listservs<br />

Currently there are over 50 newsgroups and hundreds of listservs deal<strong>in</strong>g with subjects related to India.<br />

Through newsgroups and listservs it is possible to participate <strong>in</strong> discussions of current <strong>in</strong>terest topics and to<br />

stay updated on new Internet resources. Newsgroup FAQs provide answers to frequently asked questions and<br />

the listserv archives of previous discussions can also be highly useful resources <strong>in</strong> themselves. A<br />

comprehensive list of newsgroups and a list of some of the better known listservs is available at the<br />

WWWVL:India page (http://webhead.com/WWWVL/India/<strong>in</strong>dia5.html). The short list below illustrates some<br />
