Navigat<strong>in</strong>g Conceptual Space: An Application<br />

The ideas discussed <strong>in</strong> this paper have been implemented <strong>in</strong> the Networked In<strong>format</strong>ion Discovery and Retrieval<br />

(NIDR) system WAVE (http://wave.eecs.wsu.edu/), which is be<strong>in</strong>g developed <strong>in</strong> a project entitled "Creat<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

WAVE." This project aims at provid<strong>in</strong>g an answer to the question "what is the appropriate architecture for a digital<br />

library?". While the current prototype of the WAVE conceptual browser (a downloadable copy is available from the<br />

WAVE Web site) is a standalone application runn<strong>in</strong>g under W<strong>in</strong>dows, it will later be made accessible as a Java-based<br />

application.<br />

[Tab. 3] demonstrates conceptual brows<strong>in</strong>g with the WAVE system over movie data. By access<strong>in</strong>g the Internet Movie<br />

Database (http://us.imdb.com/), data relat<strong>in</strong>g to movies has been automatically extracted and pre-processed to produce<br />

a base <strong>format</strong> suitable for use <strong>in</strong> the WAVE conceptual browser. To illustrate the process of conceptual brows<strong>in</strong>g over<br />

a movie concept space, we chose a small database of 250 movies. You beg<strong>in</strong> with an empty browser. You can choose<br />

the application which you want to browse over (<strong>in</strong> this case movies) from a menu of applications. You next select<br />

facets of <strong>in</strong>terest to you from the movie application. Movie facets might <strong>in</strong>clude: Actor, Actress, Certification,<br />

Company Produced By, Genre, Keyword, Length, Period and Producer. Suppose you chose the 5 facets: Actor,<br />

Actress, Certification, Length and Period. The <strong>in</strong>itial conceptual similarity browse defaults to the extentional mode
