ABSTRACT<br />

In this paper we introduce <strong>the</strong> eLectures <strong>portal</strong><br />

developed at our university <strong>an</strong>d use it to (a) report<br />

best-practices <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> archival, org<strong>an</strong>isation, <strong>an</strong>d<br />

distribution of recorded <strong>lecture</strong>s (eLectures) as well<br />

as <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir usage in everyday teaching, <strong>an</strong>d (b)<br />

pinpoint open problems <strong>an</strong>d describe current<br />

research issues related to <strong>the</strong> production,<br />

m<strong>an</strong>agement, <strong>an</strong>d usage of such <strong>lecture</strong> <strong>recordings</strong>.<br />

1. INTRODUCTION<br />

In <strong>the</strong> mid 90s several educational institutions<br />

started to record some of <strong>the</strong>ir courses. Me<strong>an</strong>while,<br />

such <strong>lecture</strong> <strong>recordings</strong> or eLectures have become<br />

<strong>an</strong> integral part of education at m<strong>an</strong>y universities<br />

<strong>an</strong>d are being used in addition to traditional ways of<br />

teaching at more <strong>an</strong>d more institutions [HMO06].<br />

eLectures represent <strong>the</strong> respective contents with<br />

multimedia documents (“virtual <strong>lecture</strong>s”). The<br />

recorded media contain <strong>the</strong> voice, <strong>the</strong> slides as well<br />

as additional h<strong>an</strong>dwritings <strong>an</strong>d <strong>an</strong>notations of <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>lecture</strong>r; all of which are being replayed<br />

synchronously. Hereby <strong>the</strong> interaction of <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>lecture</strong>r with <strong>the</strong> slides during <strong>the</strong> presentation (e.g.<br />

pointing at objects, underlining, or elaborating on a<br />

<strong>for</strong>mula) is also recorded. The replay of <strong>the</strong>se<br />

dynamic <strong>an</strong>notations normally increases <strong>the</strong><br />

underst<strong>an</strong>ding of <strong>the</strong> contents. O<strong>the</strong>r streams that<br />

c<strong>an</strong> be recorded are <strong>the</strong> video of <strong>the</strong> <strong>lecture</strong>r or<br />

captured screen <strong>recordings</strong> of used applications.<br />

Permission to make digital or hard copies of all or part of this<br />

work <strong>for</strong> personal or classroom use is gr<strong>an</strong>ted without fee<br />

provided that copies are not made or distributed <strong>for</strong> profit or<br />

commercial adv<strong>an</strong>tage <strong>an</strong>d that copies bear this notice <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong><br />

full citation on <strong>the</strong> first page. To copy o<strong>the</strong>rwise, to republish, to<br />

post on servers or to redistribute to lists, requires prior specific<br />

permission.<br />

Due to <strong>the</strong>ir size (<strong>the</strong> recorded data c<strong>an</strong> get up to<br />

several hundred megabytes) <strong>the</strong> <strong>recordings</strong> were<br />

originally often distributed to <strong>the</strong> students using<br />

CDROMs. Because of <strong>the</strong> <strong>for</strong>th going technological<br />

development <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong> increasing b<strong>an</strong>dwidths, today<br />

delivery of such documents over <strong>the</strong> internet c<strong>an</strong> be<br />

seen as <strong>the</strong> de facto st<strong>an</strong>dard. However, we often<br />

observe that people spend a lot of thought in how to<br />

produce such eLectures in <strong>the</strong> best possible way<br />

but lack a good strategy <strong>for</strong> archival <strong>an</strong>d distribution.<br />

Often, <strong>the</strong> respective files are just offered <strong>for</strong><br />

download via a course’s web page or a web site<br />

that was set up separately. However, students<br />

generally dem<strong>an</strong>d more service, such as better<br />

<strong>archive</strong>s <strong>an</strong>d structure, full-text search, etc.<br />

Similarly, content providers, i.e. <strong>the</strong> <strong>lecture</strong>rs, ask<br />

<strong>for</strong> ways to restrict <strong>the</strong> access to selected groups,<br />

integrate <strong>the</strong> <strong>archive</strong>s into existing learning<br />

m<strong>an</strong>agement systems, etc.<br />

Because of this, we started developing <strong>the</strong> eLecture<br />

<strong>portal</strong> 1 at our institute in 2003. In <strong>the</strong> following, we<br />

first describe <strong>the</strong> <strong>portal</strong> <strong>an</strong>d its usage. Then, we<br />

illustrate some of its special features <strong>an</strong>d present<br />

some issues <strong>for</strong> current <strong>an</strong>d future research.<br />

2. THE ELECTURE PORTAL<br />

Using <strong>the</strong> eLecture <strong>portal</strong> students have <strong>the</strong> ability<br />

to access <strong>the</strong> provided <strong>lecture</strong> <strong>recordings</strong> <strong>an</strong>ytime<br />

<strong>an</strong>d <strong>an</strong>ywhere if <strong>the</strong> <strong>lecture</strong>r authorized access to<br />

<strong>the</strong> materials. The <strong>recordings</strong> are available in<br />

different file <strong>for</strong>mats 2 in order to ensure optimal<br />

delivery to <strong>the</strong> heterogeneous environment (e.g.<br />

different b<strong>an</strong>dwidths, various resolutions on <strong>the</strong><br />

students’ displays, etc.) The eLectures are<br />

org<strong>an</strong>ised hierarchically following <strong>the</strong> course<br />

structure <strong>an</strong>d academic calendar. A user<br />

m<strong>an</strong>agement has been implemented which gives<br />

<strong>lecture</strong>rs <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r members of <strong>the</strong> chair <strong>the</strong><br />

1 http://<strong>e<strong>lecture</strong></strong>s.in<strong>for</strong>matik.uni-freiburg.de<br />

2 Available <strong>for</strong>mats include Lecturnity with/without video,<br />

RealMedia, Windows Media Video, <strong>an</strong>d Flash<br />

Animations.

ability to easily upload <strong>an</strong>d org<strong>an</strong>ize <strong>the</strong> <strong>recordings</strong><br />

after a <strong>lecture</strong> has been held. An overview of <strong>the</strong><br />

most import<strong>an</strong>t best-practice issues related to <strong>the</strong><br />

distribution <strong>an</strong>d org<strong>an</strong>ization of eLectures c<strong>an</strong> be<br />

found in [LMT04].<br />

The eLecture Portal is used more <strong>an</strong>d more by <strong>the</strong><br />

students. In 2003, <strong>the</strong>re were only 2,700 visits<br />

which increased rapidly <strong>the</strong> following years (2004:<br />

26,192 visits; 2005: 45,990 visits) <strong>an</strong>d with <strong>the</strong><br />

numbers of visits till June 2006 (26,678 visits) we<br />

expect <strong>the</strong> usage of <strong>the</strong> <strong>portal</strong> to increase even<br />

fur<strong>the</strong>r in <strong>the</strong> near future. In addition, more <strong>an</strong>d<br />

more institutes are using <strong>the</strong> <strong>portal</strong>. Starting only<br />

with a few courses from <strong>the</strong> Institute of Computer<br />

Science in 2003, today almost all of <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>lecture</strong>s<br />

are available at <strong>the</strong> <strong>portal</strong>. O<strong>the</strong>r departments, like<br />

<strong>the</strong> Department of Microsystems Engineering <strong>an</strong>d<br />

<strong>the</strong> Psychology department have also shown<br />

interest <strong>an</strong>d started using <strong>the</strong> <strong>portal</strong> as well.<br />

Detailed access evaluation toge<strong>the</strong>r with in<strong>for</strong>mation<br />

about how students are actually using <strong>the</strong> data c<strong>an</strong><br />

be found in [HMO06, ZH02, HLT06].<br />

3. FEATURES AND CURRENT RESEARCH<br />

Because of <strong>the</strong> increasing interest <strong>an</strong>d growing<br />

usage of <strong>the</strong> <strong>portal</strong>, we are continuously faced with<br />

new challenges in <strong>the</strong> ongoing development <strong>an</strong>d<br />

mainten<strong>an</strong>ce of <strong>the</strong> software. In addition,<br />

technology keeps ch<strong>an</strong>ging <strong>an</strong>d improving, thus<br />

continuously providing us with new possibilities <strong>an</strong>d<br />

opportunities to improve <strong>the</strong> related services <strong>for</strong><br />

both <strong>lecture</strong>rs as well as end users, i.e. <strong>the</strong><br />

students. In <strong>the</strong> following, we describe some of <strong>the</strong><br />

unique features that distinguish our approach from<br />

comparable ones. In addition, we address some of<br />

<strong>the</strong> current <strong>an</strong>d future research issues related to<br />

eLectures.<br />

Providing a hierarchical structure <strong>an</strong>d a search on<br />

Meta data level is import<strong>an</strong>t to enable com<strong>for</strong>table<br />

access to <strong>the</strong> files. However, because of <strong>the</strong><br />

tremendous amount of data it is essential to also<br />

allow <strong>for</strong> a detailed search within <strong>the</strong> actual<br />

documents in order to offer a maximum usability<br />

<strong>an</strong>d usefulness. For this reason, we developed a<br />

search engine which enables <strong>the</strong> users to per<strong>for</strong>m a<br />

full text search in <strong>the</strong> contents of <strong>the</strong> slides even<br />

when <strong>the</strong>y have been recorded with screen<br />

grabbing <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong>re<strong>for</strong>e are only available in a<br />

bitmap <strong>for</strong>mat [WEB05]. This is done by matching<br />

<strong>the</strong> screen grabbed recording with <strong>the</strong> original slides<br />

<strong>an</strong>d reconstructing <strong>the</strong> original object-based textual<br />

in<strong>for</strong>mation. The result of a search is a direct link to<br />

<strong>the</strong> slides containing <strong>the</strong> search terms. Currently<br />

we are developing <strong>an</strong> extension to this search<br />

engine enabling <strong>the</strong> user to also search in <strong>the</strong> audio<br />

stream, i.e. <strong>the</strong> recording of <strong>the</strong> <strong>lecture</strong>r’s voice. For<br />

this, automatic speech recognition is used to create<br />

a full text index of <strong>the</strong> respective speech signals.<br />

Fur<strong>the</strong>r in<strong>for</strong>mation about <strong>the</strong> current status of <strong>the</strong><br />

search engine c<strong>an</strong> be found in [HD06].<br />

With <strong>the</strong> increasing popularity <strong>an</strong>d per<strong>for</strong>m<strong>an</strong>ce of<br />

mobile devices, new possibilities arise <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

delivery <strong>an</strong>d usage of eLectures. As <strong>an</strong>o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

development, we <strong>the</strong>re<strong>for</strong>e started to experiment<br />

with <strong>the</strong> distribution of <strong>lecture</strong> <strong>recordings</strong> as<br />

podcasts. Podcasts are currently enjoying <strong>an</strong><br />

increasing popularity – especially among students –<br />

due to <strong>the</strong> pervasiveness of mobile media players<br />

such as Apple’s iPods. Using RSS feeds, <strong>the</strong><br />

students automatically get <strong>the</strong> newest <strong>lecture</strong><br />

<strong>recordings</strong> when <strong>the</strong>y are made available on <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>portal</strong>. Automatically tr<strong>an</strong>sferring <strong>the</strong>m to a mobile<br />

device opens new perspectives <strong>for</strong> additional<br />

learning scenarios where students c<strong>an</strong> access <strong>the</strong><br />

respective in<strong>for</strong>mation “on-<strong>the</strong>-road” without <strong>the</strong><br />

need to carry around a heavy <strong>an</strong>d bulky laptop. A<br />

description of podcasting <strong>an</strong>d eLectures including<br />

<strong>an</strong> initial discussion of potential usage scenarios<br />

c<strong>an</strong> be found in [HW06].<br />

O<strong>the</strong>r past <strong>an</strong>d current research issues related to<br />

<strong>the</strong> archival, delivery, <strong>an</strong>d usage of eLectures<br />

include, <strong>for</strong> example, <strong>the</strong> integration of students’<br />

<strong>an</strong>notations into <strong>the</strong> <strong>recordings</strong> [LL02] <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong><br />

evaluation of new ways <strong>for</strong> teaching <strong>an</strong>d learning<br />

using eLectures [TL05]. Apart from <strong>the</strong>se<br />

questions, <strong>the</strong>re are a lot of o<strong>the</strong>r open research<br />

problems <strong>an</strong>d interesting perspectives <strong>for</strong> future<br />

work. For example, <strong>the</strong> dem<strong>an</strong>d by o<strong>the</strong>r people<br />

not directly affiliated to our university to access <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>lecture</strong>s, is const<strong>an</strong>tly increasing. This necessitates<br />

<strong>the</strong> development of additional, complex<br />

authorisation <strong>an</strong>d permission systems in order to<br />

better m<strong>an</strong>age open as well as restricted access to<br />

some of <strong>the</strong> documents.<br />

Ano<strong>the</strong>r challenge we are facing is <strong>the</strong> integration of<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>portal</strong> software in <strong>the</strong> IT-infrastructure of <strong>the</strong><br />

university, enabling all of our departments to use<br />

<strong>the</strong> provided functionality <strong>an</strong>d to ease <strong>the</strong><br />

administration <strong>an</strong>d development of <strong>the</strong> <strong>portal</strong> by our<br />

local software service team.<br />
