they truly “Believe in Blue”, at the 80th South Dakota State
Convention held April 13-15, 2008 at the SDSU Campus in
Christiansen, Past South Dakota State FFA Officer and National
evening of April 14th 279 FFA members were honored with their
State FFA Degrees and five State Stars were announced. By April
15th members came to the morning session tired from dancing the
they Believe in Blue and really do have Bright Futures!
Milbank FFA Chapter Conducts "Shave It or Save It" Fundraising
Promotion - Senior FFA Student Advisor, Patrick Bray, had his hair on
the line for fundraising promotion for the Milbank Community Foundation Combine Appeal
program. Milbank FFA Senior Treasurer, Heidi Kirchner came up with the promotion idea that
the Milbank FFA Chapter should do a fundraiser for either shaving Senior FFA student advisor,
Patrick Bray's hair or have him keep his hair. The Milbank FFA Officer team was broken down
into two groups-debaters vs non debaters with Patrick being neutral. The Officers were given
the goal of raising no less then $350 in three weeks. The Milbank FFA Senior officers
conducted various promotions with the Milbank students, such as selling ice cream at dinner,
grub down day-where students paid to dress down for the day, pop day, etc. After the three
weeks, the Officer team raised $507, with the debaters officers raising the most money. The
Shave it was over $100 more than Save it, so Patrick will be shaving his hair off after the
Milbank prom.
Lennox Sundstrom FFA - Our chapter is currently working on plans for expanding the
memorial garden we built in front of our high school and designing a sign to hang over the
entrance. We are also getting ready for our annual banquet on May 6. Many members are busy
filling out applications for chapter awards to be given out at the banquet. Senior members
recently applied for scholarships from our FFA Support Group who gives out about $2500 in
scholarships to graduating members every year. Two members of our chapter, Colton Buus and
Chelsea Rops, received National FFA Scholarships. - Chelsea Rops, Vice President
Watertown Area FFA had a great time at the State Convention especially for our first time. We
are also preparing for our FFA banquet that will be on May 14. At the banquet we will be
thanking the community for helping get our chapter going. Lately we have been working with
GPS and Autosteer in our Precision Ag class at LATI. - Shawn Mack, Watertown Area FFA
Chapter Reporter
The Viborg FFA members are busy preparing for the annual FFA banquet. Members are busy
setting up their committees for summer activites and there is also a minimum of 3 members
planning on attending west river FFA camp. - Katie Hart, Viborg FFA Reporter
This year the Madison FFA chapter was very successful. The Horse Judging team placed 7th at
state and received a silver award. We had four silver awards and three bronze awards. Our
chapter was also recognized with a gold rating in the chapter award and we will advance to
nationals for the first time since 1984. Our banquet held on April 21 was also booming. We
awarded our greenhand and chapter degrees and gave out a star greenhand award. Our guest
speakers were Maria Skoglund and Erin Kennedy. They gave us words of encouragement and
future FFA events we should attend this summer. This reminded us that FFA doesn’t end after
the banquet and start up again in the fall but that it continues on in the summer. Our members
have worked very hard this year and this year’s banquet proved that fact. Many awards were
given one of which was an award for the members with the most points (we installed a point
system this year) and another award for the best leader in our chapter (which was voted on by
the chapter members). Our members give their all to this chapter and they help make it
successful.
The Arlington FFA chapter has wrapped up state convention and is very proud of their
accomplishments. We had fun competing, attending workshops, meeting new people, listening to
speakers, and of course attending the dance. We are currently planning our chapter banquet and
our dance to follow. We look forward to wrapping up our year and starting a new one. We are
also fundraising to cover expenses for FFA Leadership Camp and Washington Leadership
Conference. We are very excited to meet new people and learn about ways to improve our
chapter at camp and WLC. The FFA chapter is putting on an animal nursery for elementary
students and community members in May. We can’t wait for summer and all the activities we
have planned. - Submitted by Hannah Johnson
The Woonsocket FFA has been very busy with its BOAC project. We are landscaping the local
depot museum, and around the Welcome to Woonsocket sign. We met in April and had a
pizza/tie dieing party. In May, we are going to the Black Hills and tour many great attractions.
The Woonsocket FFA Chapter is making plans for our annual 4th of July. Normally we serve
400 people, but with the town's anniversary we are planning on 1200.
Greetings fellow FFA Members!! The Harrisburg FFA has been very busy this spring
competing in production CDE’s, FFA week, and wrapped it all up last week with our annual
FFA banquet. We had a very successful spring CDE season and wish to congratulate all the
other chapters who qualified teams for the National Convention. Our new officer team is lead
this year by President Andrea Hollenbeck and we already have many summer activities planned.
In June, 10 members are excited to be attending the Washington Leadership Conference. In July,
we will be attending the east river leadership camp and August will find us busy once again
hosting and operating the Old MacDonald’s Farm animal nursery at the Sioux Empire Fair.
Enjoy the end of the school year and have a fun and safe summer! - Caitlin Peterson, Harrisburg
FFA Reporter
Things are winding down as the Bridgewater FFA Chapter closes the door to another successful
year. We had a good turnout at State Convention with proficiencies and CDE awards, and look
forward to what next year will bring for our chapter. The FFA Greenhouse and banquet are the
top priorities as we prepare for the end of the year. It will be a sad end to the year as we say
goodbye to Mr. Hoffman, Bridgewater FFA Chapter advisor for eighteen years. We thank him
for his hard work and service, and wish him luck in the near future as we begin a new year
without him at Bridgewater. We have been blessed with his leadership and guidance, and along
with those, the memories that won't be forgotten...Thank You. - Josie Clarey-Reporter
The Kimball FFA is winding down from a busy year! During FFA week we held an Ag
Scavenger Hunt for elementary students, a Mock CDE for community members, and fun dress
up days. Members competed at many CDE’s throughout March and April and we returned home
from State Convention with 11 Bronze and 5 Silver Awards. Our upcoming activities include
planning a Lip-Sync to provide funds for a Community Emergency Fund. At our chapter
banquet on May 5th, Greenhand and Chapter Degrees will be handed out along with the
announcement of the 2008-2009 Kimball Chapter Officer team. The current officers are
President: Thomas Smith, Vice President: Taylor Geppert, Secretary: Kaye Leiferman, Treasurer:
Maura Bickner, Reporter: Sarah Sample, Sentinel: Tanner Warren, and Student Advisor: Ann
Kroupa. The Kimball FFA’s advisor is Lori K. Tonak.
Business and Industry Visits
By: Erin Kennedy
This past March the State FFA Officers had the chance to travel
the state and visit with industry leaders, major manufactures, small
business owners and entrepreneurs. State Vice President Erin Kennedy
and State Secretary Sara Berg visited the Rapid City and Newell area.
State President Brett Monson and State Sentinel Noelle Rist toured the
Sioux Falls and Harrisburg area. State Reporter Lauren Fosheim and
State Treasurer Matt Dybedahl journeyed around the Pierre and Philip
region. To accompany the officers on their adventures, members from the
Rapid City, Newell and Philip FFA chapters toured the agricultural
industries with the officers.
Touring businesses and industries are a great way to learn a
little bit more the agriculture within our area and it is also a great way to
increase possible sponsorship within your community. Getting in touch
with industry leaders provides numerous benefits for both the industry
and the local chapter and also provides a great way to stay in touch with
the local community. Visiting businesses can serve as great field trips for
FFA chapters and also provides awesome ways to get to know fellow
FFA members better.
It’s spring time. The time has come to get out of the stuffy old
Ag room and start getting involved in your local community again. What
a better way than doing some industry tours in your own community?
Thank you to Sandra
Beyers, Bowdle FFA
Alumnus, for
designing our new SD
FFA Foundation logo!
FFA Chapters Receive Star National Chapter Awards
The McCook Central FFA, Bridgewater FFA & Harrisburg FFA Chapters received
Star National Chapter Awards at the South Dakota State FFA Convention in
Brookings, April 13-15. The purpose of the Star National Chapter Awards is to
encourage chapters to develop and use a strong Program of Activities.
Successful chapters plan and carry out activities centered around three key
areas: student, chapter, and community development. Those most successful are
recognized with the Star National Chapter Award. This award is sponsored by
Land O’Lakes Foundation & Toyota.
In 1 st place, the McCook Central FFA Chapter conducted the following:
Student Development Area-McCook Central applied three Student Development
Activities. The first activity was titled “Project IMAGE (Involved Members as
Great Examples)” used experienced members and their SAE programs as
examples to increase the participation of all FFA members in applying for
advanced degrees and proficiency awards above the Chapter Level. The second
was titled “Project Lead (Leadership, Education & Development)” to improve the
participation of the chapter members in the different leadership activities offered
to them and pass these skills on to the FFA members and school or community
organizations. The third activity was titled “Project HELP (Hands on Learning
Program)” included providing hands on learning experience with a cooperative
Supervised Agricultural Experience Program for our members with our 40 acre
land laboratory.
Chapter Development-McCook Central applied three Chapter Development
Activities. The first was titled “Member Involvement & Retention” to improve their
graduate membership and to maintain the membership of current school
members. The second activity was titled “Project FYI (For Youth Involvement)” to
develop a program that would involve the youth of their community to develop
self-esteem in FFA members and create an agricultural awareness to those
elementary students participating. The third activities title was “Building Leaders
Program” the projects primary purpose was to implement a plan to develop quality
leaders for their chapter and designing a Program of Activities that would
challenge their officers and the members of their Chapter. This entailed 100%
participation of State Leadership Camp, 100% participation in selecting a
committee chairperson, setting goals and developing a calendar of events.
Having committee or event chairperson assign a freshman or sophomore member
as an assistant to develop continued leadership for their future.
Community Development-McCook Centrals three Community Development
Activities included: Teaching members the value of community involvement and
developing a sense of pride in their organization and chapter through involvement
with other organizations and in being prepared to assist others when needed.
The first activity was their SOS (Students of Service) using these guidelines they
have served various organizations in their community throughout the year and in
working with others conducted a benefit breakfast for a family whose house was
burned helping raise over $7,000 dollars for their immediate needs. The second
activity was to improve the well-being of residents of a home with Achieve in
Sioux Falls. Members would interact with residents, staff and community
members by constructing a 14 foot gazebo and donating it to the residence. Here
they would be able to spend evenings outside without the worry of mosquitos.
McCook Centrals third community development activity was there “Holiday Adopt
a Family Program” where students collected items from members to create two
family dinners during the holiday season with each basket having all the
necessary items for a traditional holiday meal. They also placed up their
Christmas sharing tree during this time in the high school and 70 gifts were
purchased and delivered to those less fortunate in our school district. A motto of
the McCook Central FFA chapter has always been pride and hope begins in our
own communities.
In 2 nd place, the Bridgewater FFA Chapter:
Student Development Area-Bridgewater’s first activity was an Agricultural Issues
Forum to enhance their leadership skills. Their second activity was a
Cardiopulminary Resuscitation Class to develop healthy lifestyles and personal
Summer is just around the corner and that means there will be no more cramming for tests, grueling sports practices, or cold winter days! With
summer just days away, everyone is planning their activities for the three months of freedom that we all get. Towards the top of everyone’s list is some
sort of camp that is their favorite for various reasons. Summer camp is a stupendous way for students of all ages to make friends, have fun, and maybe
even learn one or two life skills. This year’s FFA Camp will be no exception. The three opportunities that there are to attend camp will be: July 1-3, at
Camp NeSoDak, July 9-12, at Camp Bob Marshall, and July 13-16, at Camp Bob Marshall. Camp is a great way to meet FFA members in this great state
and to gather a greater understanding of FFA knowledge and the innumerable opportunities that FFA has to offer. So grab life by the horns and come to
FFA Camp with an open mind and the willingness to have fun. I promise that you will leave with a greater comprehension of yourself, leadership, and the
desire to give your all in life and FFA. Do not forget, registration is due June 13th. See you all there!
