British Swimming Biographical Data 

This site is intended to display information used within our sport. It lists your name, date of birth, 

current clubs, ranked club and details of your swims. This information has been obtained from 

your membership form and the results from licensed meets you have competed in. 

You are now able to register and add additional biographical information. This may then be 

changed by you at any time using your password. 

The information will be used at swimming events to help announcers and commentators. 

The electronic form should help keep the data accurate. 

It is a condition of you being able to change the data that you do not list any information that can be 

used to enable people to contact you such as email addresses, school/college, telephone numbers 

and addresses. Failure to comply with this condition will result in your information details 

being withdrawn. 

Once you have registered to use the service you will be able to select an option to remove your 

information at any time should you be unhappy with your information being displayed. If you think 

someone else may be changing your data please email here with the details. 

The information will not be kept for longer than necessary and we will take appropriate steps 

to ensure that the information is kept up to date.

Welcome to the online entry form for the 2008 British Swimming Masters Championships (50m) 

and Senior Age Group Championships. 

This may be used for both individual and bulk entries. Enter your registration number and 

your fastest long course time from our 2007 Masters records will be displayed. 

Please check the events you wish to enter. You may change times if you have a time 

from competition we do not have information about. Converted time are accepted. 

You may only enter a maximum of seven events. If you enter more then all your entries will 

be rejected. 

Please do not submit more than one form for a swimmer. If you do the new entry will overwrite 

the old entry and the previous information lost.

Always remember to warm up 

before swimming lengths. You 

could try starting your session by 

stretching, gliding around the pool 

and a few slow lengths of the pool. 

Warming up is vital to get the blood 

flowing around your body and to 

your muscles. It will encourage 

your body to adapt to the water 

and become more flexible, meaning 

you will find the lengths to come 

easier! It will also help you avoid 

injury.

PROGRAMME 02 May 2008 

The Institute of Swimming (IoS) is pleased to announce a successful outcome 

of the OFSTED inspection into the delivery of the Advanced Apprenticeship in 

Sporting Excellence (AASE) programme.

The Amateur Swimming Association is committed to promoting the welfare of children in our sport. That is 

why we have joined with the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children in creating 

SwimLine. 

The service is provided for anyone involved in swimming, including children and young people who believe 

that the welfare of a young child is at risk. This could be neglect or abuse, bullying or fear of someone, or 

anything that is worrying you and you don't know who to discuss it with. 

What happens if you call? 

When you ring, you will hear a message. This will explain that you wish to speak to someone urgently or it 

would not be convenient for someone to call you back - you can press a number to transfer straight to the 

NSPCC Child Protection Helpline. 

This will be answered by trained and experienced counsellors who will advise you and act to protect 

children. 

If there is a problem with someone calling you back and you wish to speak to someone who understands 

swimming, you will need to leave your telephone number and time when it is convenient for one of our Child

Protection Group to ring. These people are members of swimming clubs who work in child welfare as a 

profession and have volunteered to help this ASA programme. 

If there is an issue which causes concern the ASA will act to protect the child. 

SwimLine calls are free and do not appear on itemised bills unless the call is made from a mobile phone. 

SwimLine does not use the 1471 code or any other call return or call display facility.

we will aim to contact you on Monday.

Regional Offices 

The eight new Regions are now established and will lead the Association in to a challenging new phase. 

Each Region will have full time professional staff to build the necessary infrastructures and partnerships 

to enable the ASA to deliver its vision. 

The Regions will be underpinned by good corporate governance, but will focus on : 

● improving talent pathways, 

● getting more people involved in all of swimming disciplines and 

● providing more and better coaches, volunteers and officials 

At the forefront of those initiatives is Swim 21 the club development and accreditation 

programme. Currently about one third of all ASA affiliated clubs are now signed up to the Scheme with 

more and more joining all the time.

Background 

ASA CONSTITUTIONAL REVIEW 

INITIAL CONSULTATION 

At its meeting in October 2007 the ASA Board received a paper prepared by the Chief Executive inviting 

a review of the current ASA Constitution. The paper recommended, in particular, a Working Group 

be formed to consider amendments to the ASA Constitutional Laws (as opposed to Technical Laws), to 

move towards a framework approach that protects members with strong enshrined principles of 

corporate governance whilst allowing flexibility in the development and amendment of Protocols 

and Regulations that govern day to day activities of ASA and its members. 

The Board agreed to the following recommendations:- 

A Working Group to be formed comprising of five people of which two should be ASA Board Members 

to review all constitutional laws with a view to proposing a move to a framework approach. 

The Working Group was tasked to report back to the ASA Board with a view to proposals (if approved) 

being placed before the 2008 ASA Council Meeting. 

The Working Group was duly formed comprising of the following members

External legal support was provided to the Group in the initial stages of the review by Mr Jonathan 

Taylor, Bird & Bird solicitors, London. 

Agreed Approach 

It was agreed that, in order to ensure that the ASA’s constitution was flexible enough to allow it to 

adapt quickly to external change whilst also maintaining principles of good governance, the 

existing constitutional provisions (including the ASA laws, the Technical rules and the Judicial rules), and 

the mechanism for amending them should be restructured along the following lines: 

Laws – these would be the “core” principles of the constitution, i.e. those provisions that “regulate 

the relationship between the ASA and its membership in their capacity as members of the company”. 

These can only be added to or amended by the ASA Council at general meeting (in accordance with 

the procedure set out at Law 25). 

Rules – these would consist of the “operational” rules of the ASA constitution which “regulate the terms 

of which the members participate in the sport”. The ASA Council would delegate the power to alter, 

issue and amend these Rules to the ASA Board. Any decision of the ASA Board to amend these Rules 

would always be subject to ratification by the ASA Council at general meeting. 

Guidance/Protocols – these would be produced and amended by the ASA’s professional staff/committees. 

A review of the current Constitution was thus undertaken by members of the Group culminating in 

the production to the ASA Board at its April 2008 meeting of an Excel spreadsheet containing a 

skeleton outline of the form of a revised Constitution recommended by the Working Group. Use was made 

of a traffic light system to indicate those matters which will remain in the ASA Constitution (noted red) 

and those noted green and blue which would remain in force albeit with the status of subordinate 

regulations/guidance materials. 

Traffic Light System 

As identified on the Excel spreadsheet 

Red – Indicates those principles and intentions which should remain or be transposed to constitutional 

laws which may only be changed by two thirds majority of the ASA Council. 



Green – Indicates those matters which should remain as mandatory but which will assume the status 

of regulations and which may be changed by a majority decision of the ASA Board and subject always 

to subsequent ratification by the ASA Council. 

Blue – Statements of principle and intention with regard to matters which will assume the status 

of guidelines/operational protocols (or similar) changes to which may be made by the appropriate 

ASA personnel to whom delegated authorities are vested by the ASA Board but in respect of which 

changes do not necessarily require the affirmative decision of the ASA Board. 

The Next Stage 

There is attached to this Consultation Web Page below a mock-up of the proposed revised Constitution (i. 

e. those items identified in red in the Excel spreadsheet). It should be noted that these items have 

been simply transposed from the existing 

ASA Constitution to illustrate the principles and intent which will be put before 

ASA Council for consideration in October 2008. Further detailed refinement (including renumbering and 

the introduction of appropriate enabling provisions to link together the Constitution with the Regulations) 

will thereafter be necessary in the event that the changes in principle were to be agreed at Council. 

There is also attached an outline set of Regulations of the ASA (green items) which will assume the status 

of regulations and the guidelines (blue items). 

Again these are attached for illustration purposes only as again further detailed work will be required 

in regard to refinement of these matters and to ensure that the ASA Constitution and subordinate 

regulations dovetail together. 

In essence, it is the intention that those fundamental items which establish the relationship as regards 

the ASA members “inter se” ( i.e between and amongst themselves) and with the Association should 

remain within the Constitution. For that reason the appointment of an ASA Board and its Constitution, 

the requirement to hold an annual general meeting and the creation of the office of Trustees with the 

power to hold property are fundamental constitutional matters. 

However, in light of the wish of the ASA Board to consider a more facilitative and framework Constitution 

the detailed practical arrangements governing the workings the ASA Board (and various committees and 

the Judicial processes) would be a matter for subordinate regulation, subject to the safeguard that 

any changes are subject to ratification by the ASA Council. 

This Consultation exercise was posted on the ASA website on a dedicated page on 7 May 2008 with a view 

to engagement in a consultation process for an initial four week period expiring 4 June 2008. During 

that period any ASA member is invited to provide feedback with regard to any aspect of the 

proposed constitutional changes. Following the closure of the initial consultation period all responses will 

be reviewed by the Working Group who will take due account of all representations in formulating a 

Report for consideration by the ASA Board at its meeting on 27 June 2008. At that time a decision will 



be made by the ASA Board, based upon the initial Report of the Working Group and comments 

and representations from the ASA membership, as to whether to put forward the proposed new 

ASA constitutional framework for consideration at ASA Council in October 2008. It will of course be open 

to the Regions and the ASA membership to further consider their responses to the consultation exercise 

as part and parcel of the democratic process of County Association and Regional Council Meetings during 

the early Autumn period and prior to the ASA Council Meeting.

Olympic trials and British Championships. 

‘There has been, quite clearly, a quantum leap forward for swimming in Britain,’ said national performance director, Michael 

Scott. ‘There are certainly many positives and a good spread of events for both the men and the women.’ But he warned: ‘There 

are also things to work on and we must put this in context. World swimming has moved on in the last six months and there 

are many nations who have yet to hold their trials. We haven’t fallen behind but I believe this is going to be a fast Olympics 

and that’s a challenge we have to meet. We have to maintain our momentum.’

British Swimming National Short Course Rankings are based on times obtained in 25m pools. 

They include National, District and County events as well as licensed open meets and results from 

international fixtures where possible. There may be times, which have not been included from 

these meets where the swimmers name and/or the date of birth have not matched with our 

National Registration database. Those swimmers who have applied to become dual registered are 

recognised as such. To ensure inclusion in these lists it is imperative that swimmers enter events 

with the name shown on their National Registration card, if this is incorrect, please contact the ASA 

Registration department (01509 618727) for amendment. It is the responsibility of the Meet

National Long Course Rankings 

1 st May 2007 to 27 th April 2008 

British Swimming National Long Course Rankings are based on times obtained in 50m pools. They 

include National, District and County events as well as licensed open meets and results from 

international fixtures where possible. There may be times, which have not been included from these 

meets where the swimmers name and/or the date of birth have not matched with our National 

Registration database. Those swimmers who have applied to become dual registered are recognised 

as such. To ensure inclusion in these lists it is imperative that swimmers enter events with the name 

shown on their National Registration card, if this is incorrect, please contact the ASA Registration 

department (01509 618727) for amendment. It is the responsibility of the Meet Manager to send the 

relevant information, in the correct format, to the British Swimming Rankings office for the inclusion in 

these lists. Please note that if a top five listing was not possible for any given event, then that event 

does not appear in these rankings.

The 12 character meet codes in this list have been edited to try to 

introduce some consistency. 

Where possible the geographical names of the club are shown in order to 

help identification in gala programmes. The following rules have been 

applied where possible, however, in a very few cases where this would 

significantly alter a name by which a club is nationally known this may not 

be the case. 

Clubs with "Borough of" in their name are listed as BO (space) followed by 

the name 

Clubs with "City of" in their name are listed as CO (space) followed by the 

name 

Clubs with "Isle of" in their name are listed as IO (space) followed by the

Latest news and changes 

November 24, 2006: These days we compiled a first European Alltime Ranking for 

short course events. This is based on the results we collected since 2004 and FINA 

World Swimming Annuals for earlier years. For some results date, place and meet 

name are missing. You can help us to complete the data by filling in the form linked 

to such results. 

June 22, 2006: swimrankings.net can be used for national and regional rankings as 

well. For further information, please read our general offer for federations. 

May 17, 2006: swimrankings.net offers a Masters Points System now. The table 

used is also known as the German "Aschaffenburger Table 2004". 

May 4, 2006: The forum to post corrections or ideas of new features is hosted by

Championship in Trieste is directly connected to the European Ranking database. 

According to the LEN rules, only entry times from this source will be accepted for this

July 5, 2005: When you display the results of a meet, you will see a list of 

participating clubs / nations now. When you click the team name, you get the results

British Swimming & Amateur Swimming Association : National Plan

The National Plan for Teaching Swimming has recently been revised and 

is now available. 

The NPTS has been developed by the ASA to provide a template for learn to 

swim schemes. It has been designed to assist qualified teachers whose 

own experience and training will enhance the implementation of the plan. The 

NPTS is a comprehensive, integrated, progressive teaching programme based upon sound technical 

and educational principles and provides a standard reference for those responsible for planning 

swimming programmes.

The National Plan for Teaching Swimming (NPTS) has changed. A new range of Awards & Resources 

is now available to purchase through the ASA Awards centre.

Includes one copy of the Aquatic Teachers Guide, a CD of templates and a DVD of expected standards. 

The NPTS Programmers Pack provides a full introduction to the NPTS. It contains information relevant

good practice, the NPTS syllabus and more.

stroke standards, parents guidance, glossary, and some parent and child activities that you can do.

to achieve success. Ideal for use in swimming teacher meetings to help motivate and guide.

Why the Changes? 

The changes between the previous NPTS and the newly revised NPTS have been in line with recent 

updates and the sport moving forwards. The revised NPTS will be underpinned throughout by Long 

Term Athlete Development (LTAD) principles with clear progression between each stage. The revised 

NPTS will fully encompass all aquatic disciplines, and in conjunction with the RLSS, Rookie Lifesaving 

also links in to the NPTS stages. The ‘swimmer pathway’ resulting from the revised syllabus will provide 

more opportunity and variety as well as a smooth progressive structure. This in turn will provide potential 

for improved retention of swimmers at the top end of learn to swim and provide a clear link into 

specialist club scenarios. 

Consistency in Delivery & Assessment 

A DVD resource which may enhance in-house teacher training and teacher understanding and consistency 

in assessment of pupils will support the assessment procedure for the revised NPTS. The NPTS will 

be outcome focused and therefore provide a framework for the Teacher to use his or her skills 

and experience to deliver FUN and innovative classes that result in pupils achieving the given outcomes. 

All outcomes are to be achieved in order to progress onto achieving the next Award. 

Timescales & Contacts 

There will be an overlap in resources at the ASA Awards Centre of around 18 months to enable Centres 

to implement the revised programme in their own time. We understand it takes planning, finance and time 

to implement a programme and therefore envisage the first classes fully utilising the new NPTS to 

take place from January 2008 onwards. Support is available through the implementation process via the 

ASA Regional Teams.
