We delivered 30 plus m<strong>in</strong>iature flower pots<br />

and seeds to the Westsyde Elementary<br />

k<strong>in</strong>dergarten class, which <strong>in</strong>cluded Hug-a-<br />

Tree color<strong>in</strong>g books. Also, we donated several<br />

household items and puzzles to the Food<br />

Bank thrift store.<br />

On May 4, 15 volunteers participated as<br />

judges at the Kamloops/Thompson Regional<br />

Heritage Fair. The purpose of the Heritage<br />

Fair Project is to encourage students to<br />

develop an <strong>in</strong>creased awareness and <strong>in</strong>terest<br />

<strong>in</strong> Canadian history and culture. Students<br />

are able to research any aspect of Canadian<br />

history or culture and to present the results<br />

of their efforts to the community at large,<br />

us<strong>in</strong>g a variety of mediums. The judg<strong>in</strong>g<br />

process is designed to be growth-oriented<br />

and positive <strong>in</strong> nature. The <strong>in</strong>tent is to help<br />

students ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> their <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> history, to<br />

improve their skill level and to celebrate their<br />

achievements. The judg<strong>in</strong>g process will also<br />

be used to help select students to represent<br />

our region at other historical events.<br />

East Kootenays<br />

The annual barbecue and lawn dart<br />

tournament will be held on Sunday,<br />

June 25, 2006 start<strong>in</strong>g at 1:00 pm.<br />

Calgary<br />

The Calgary ambassador club is slowly but<br />

surely ga<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g momentum. A faithful group<br />

of women retirees hold their meet<strong>in</strong>gs the<br />

2nd Wednesday of every month from<br />

September to June, beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g at 9:45 am.<br />

There is a workshop after the meet<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

and also once a week alternat<strong>in</strong>g between<br />

Mondays and Tuesdays.<br />

At these workshops the ladies cont<strong>in</strong>ue with<br />

their ongo<strong>in</strong>g projects – comfort pillows for<br />

patients with recent heart surgery, and comfort<br />

bears, distributed to children <strong>in</strong> traumatic<br />

situations. Another project is mak<strong>in</strong>g tote bags<br />

for cancer out-patients, which would conta<strong>in</strong><br />

all items they <strong>need</strong> to br<strong>in</strong>g for each treatment.<br />

The women also keep themselves busy at<br />

home knitt<strong>in</strong>g and crochet<strong>in</strong>g afghans for<br />

organisations <strong>in</strong> <strong>need</strong>.<br />

The Calgary team held a very successful<br />

garage sale on May 12-13, 2006.<br />

Edmonton<br />

Edmonton enjoys a large and active volunteer<br />

base that has created unique and <strong>in</strong>novative<br />

programs <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g toy repair, sew<strong>in</strong>g, talk<strong>in</strong>g<br />

blue books, woodwork<strong>in</strong>g and prepar<strong>in</strong>g<br />

gift baskets.<br />

people profile: Jean Brien & Lorri Kidd (Pr<strong>in</strong>ce George)<br />

Lorri and Jean have been enthusiastic volunteers for <strong>TELUS</strong> Community Connections<br />

for many years. “From what we get, we can make a liv<strong>in</strong>g; what we give, however,<br />

makes a life.” This quote from Arthur Ashe serves as Lorri and Jean’s motto. They<br />

have been both <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> the Pr<strong>in</strong>ce George community with various organizations:<br />

Special Olympics, Seniors Games, AWAC (Association for Women and Children),<br />

St. V<strong>in</strong>cent’s De Paul, Hospice House, Pr<strong>in</strong>ce George Food Bank, Salvation Army,<br />

Douglas St. House, Scott Tournament of Hearts as well as several political fundrais<strong>in</strong>g<br />

events, and as role mentors for women who are fac<strong>in</strong>g challenges.<br />

Toronto<br />

Greater Toronto Area team members opened<br />

their wallets to help feed those <strong>in</strong> <strong>need</strong>,<br />

donat<strong>in</strong>g more than $1,400, as part of the<br />

annual Lunch Money Day fundrais<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>itiative held February 23. The funds go to<br />

Second Harvest, which collects unused fresh<br />

food from grocery stores and restaurants,<br />

prepar<strong>in</strong>g and deliver<strong>in</strong>g it daily to social<br />

service agencies across the city. Four <strong>TELUS</strong><br />

locations—Judson, K<strong>in</strong>g, Sheppard and<br />

Gough Road—participated <strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>itiative,<br />

which encourages people to donate the money<br />

they would normally spend on their lunch.<br />
