future by
respecting
our past
TELUS stays ahead by respecting where
we came from. We count amongst our most
significant stakeholders the team members
who helped make TELUS what it is today and
what it will be in the future.
Our retired board directors, executives
and team members gave us a legacy of
growth, innovation and social responsibility.
Today they continue to contribute through
insightful consultation, by being passionate
ambassadors for the company, and
volunteering in our communities.
Representing this important stakeholder
group are former executives of BC TEL,
one of TELUS’ predecessor companies.
helping kids in need
Tucked away on the sixth floor of ‘the Boot’ are rows and rows of boxes filled with toothpaste, deodorant,
socks and colouring books—not the sort of items you would expect to find in a TELUS office.
But this is no ordinary office in TELUS’ flagship Burnaby building. This is the operations hub of the
TELUS community ambassadors in B.C. And the supplies they gather and distribute are for people in
need throughout the province.
Bobby Farr and her team work tirelessly to assemble 5,000 backpacks full of school supplies
for needy children of all ages. The packs, known as Kits for Kids, contain everything from pencils
and erasers to a calculator and exercise books. They even include a TELUS bunny for the
younger students.
Kits for Kids are funded by proceeds from the 50/50 lottery in B.C. During May and June, the Kits
for Kids are shipped to more than 40 schools, as well as several school districts. They will then be
given to children who need them most at the start of the school year in September.
“It’s unbelievable giving a backpack to a needy child,” says Bobby, who oversees the community
ambassadors’ provincial programs in B.C. “They are surprised and grateful they can keep the packs
and the supplies. It’s very touching.”
Bobby and other volunteers also work year-round to put together thousands of comfort kits for
homeless people and those fleeing family violence. The kits are distributed to a number of shelters
and transition homes, including the Salvation Army and Covenant House in Vancouver.
The comfort kits include a wash cloth, face towel, shampoo, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant,
disposable razor, brush, comb, and from time to time nice extras such as note pads.
“The women appreciate the kits greatly,” said Priscilla, a counselor at a transition home in Vancouver.
“These women have been traumatized and abused, and they flee quickly with no time to take
anything with them.”
Community police officers on patrol in the Collingwood
neighbourhood of east Vancouver are also distributing comfort
kits to homeless people on the streets.
Bobby says the kits are helping the officers to reach out and gain
the trust of people who are normally suspicious of the police.
initiatives or would like to help out, please contact Bobby Farr
TELUS reports strong wireless and
high speed Internet results in Q1
TELUS’ first quarter results demonstrate the
continued execution of our business strategy,
focused on national data and wireless growth.
We reported a five per cent increase in revenues
to $2.1 billion from a year ago due to continued
strong wireless performance and excellent highspeed
Internet and wireless subscriber growth.
Notably, high speed customer additions were
up an encouraging 74 per cent over the first
quarter of 2005, bringing TELUS’ total Internet
subscriber base to more than one million.
Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation
and amortization (EBITDA) increased one per
cent from strong wireless growth, largely offset
by decreased wireline profitability this quarter.
Earnings per share (EPS) for the first quarter
were 60 cents, compared to 67 cents for the
same period a year ago.
TELUS introduces LG Migo phone
for pre-teens
On May 4, 2006, TELUS introduced the
LG Migo, a mobile phone designed for parents
who want to equip their children with a simple
communications device for safety and security.
Parents have a dependable way to stay in
touch with their children while controlling their
communications access at the same time.
Instead of a regular phone keypad, the Migo
has just four programmable speed-dial keys
and one programmable emergency key, all of
which parents can pre-set to phone numbers
they choose and protect with a passcode.
Parents can also program specific ring tones to
correspond with up to four different callers.
The phone’s lightweight, compact design fits
perfectly into little hands and makes it very easy
to use. The bright green Migo weighs just 70
grams (2.5 ounces) and features two bug-like
antennas, a speakerphone, volume control
keys, and a display screen that allows for Caller
Line ID service but not Internet access.
TELUS national day of service
TELUS recently announced the inauguration
of an important new program that further
underscores the commitment of TELUS, our team
members and retirees to social responsibility.
The TELUS national day of service is a special
day each year that will enable team members
across the company to volunteer time in our
communities. Often the easiest way to assist
non-profit organisations is to write a cheque.
Although the funding is critical to the operation
of the organisation, putting services into action,
contributing your heart and mind, has a more
powerful impact. It also provides much needed,
and often scarce, people resources that can
be just as important to a charity. We are a team
of 29,000 strong, and factoring in our 20,000
retirees – imagine the impact we can make as a
collective on one day in the communities where
we live, work and serve.
Canucks for Kids Fund Telethon
scores big
On April 10, 2006, TELUS team members
were on site at GM Place taking hundreds of
pledges for the annual Canuck for Kids Fund
Telethon. Along with the help of more than
130 TELUS team members and alumni at the
1795 Willingdon campus in Burnaby, the telethon
raised $894,608 for Canuck Place. Funds raised
will be donated to the Canuck Place Children’s
Hospice, which provides a ‘home-away-fromhome’
for children with progressive, life-limiting
illnesses in British Columbia.
This year, for the first time ever, TELUS team
members set up wireless networks, which
allowed volunteers to take pledges directly
from fans outside the stadium.
According to Elaine Evans, director of Annual
Giving at Canuck Place, “Everyone was a joy
to work with and the planning and organisation
provided by the TELUS team truly made the
night a success. The team worked seamlessly
together from technology to training to volunteer
coordination. We will always be truly grateful for
all of the help TELUS provided and their heartfelt
connection to the work that we do with children
and families.” She adds, “TELUS is blessed to
have such wonderful employees and retirees.”
students at Langevin School the opportunity
to engage in a number of innovative learning
“Breast cancer changed my perspective on life. Before that, I think they would
have had to drag me out of my office at 65,” says TELUS retiree and breast
cancer survivor, Judy Needham. As a volunteer with the Canadian Breast Cancer
Foundation (CBCF), Judy championed the development of the first-ever Breast
Cancer Navigation Map in Canada. She was nominated for an Individual Community
Service award from CBCF for the map, and was chosen as a finalist for the award
