(i) Toll-Like Receptors<br />

TLRs are transmembrane receptors that can be found in various cellular compartments (Table<br />

1). This family of receptors can be divi<strong>de</strong>d into two groups based on expression location and<br />

ligand specificity. TLR1, 2, 4, 5, 6 and 11 are expressed on the cell surface and recognize<br />

mainly microbial membrane components such as lipids, lipoproteins and proteins. TLR3, 7, 8<br />

and 9 recognize nucleic acids and are localized in intracellular compartments such as<br />

endosomes and lysosomes. Studies of mice <strong>de</strong>ficient for the different TLRs have<br />
