fort agréable de se réchauffer les mains en s’en allant avec les petits

être, n’oubliait jamais de leur en préparer, car Meg et Jo avaient une
longue course à faire et ne mangeaient rien d’autre jusqu’à leur retour,
qui avait rarement lieu avant trois heures de l’après-midi.
« Amusez-vous bien avec vos chats et tâchez de vous débarrasser
de votre mal de tête, petite Beth ! Adieu, chère maman ; nous sommes
ce matin de vrais diables, mais nous serons des anges quand nous
reviendrons. Allons, venez, Meg. »
Et Jo partit la première, en sentant que, pour cette fois, les pèlerins
ne se mettaient pas en route pour le paradis avec leur bonne grâce

Pensez que le sang me montait d’entendre ces mauvaises
paroles ; mais j’eus tout de même assez de sagesse pour me contenir
et, laissant ce vieux fou à sa meule, je revins annoncer aux enfants
ma déconvenue... Ces pauvres agneaux ne pouvaient pas y croire ; ils
me demandèrent comme une grâce de monter tous deux ensemble
au moulin, pour parler au grand-père... Je n’eus pas le courage de
refuser, et pfft ! voilà mes amoureux partis.
Tout juste comme ils arrivaient là-haut, maître Cornille
venait de sortir. La porte était fermée à double tour ; mais le vieux
bonhomme, en partant, avait laissé son échelle dehors, et tout de
suite l’idée vint aux enfants d’entrer par la fenêtre, voir un peu ce
qu’il y avait dans ce fameux moulin...
Chose singulière ! la chambre de la meule était vide...
Pas un sac, pas un grain de blé ; pas la moindre farine aux
murs ni sur les toiles d’araignée... On ne sentait pas même cette
bonne odeur chaude de froment écrasé qui embaume dans les
moulins... L’arbre de couche 1 était couvert de poussière, et le grand
chat maigre dormait dessus.

Le cri de la faim
Mais il n’avait pas encore fermé les yeux qu’il vit les loups arriver
et, cette fois, s’avancer tellement près qu’il n’y avait pas à songer même
à dormir. Ils étaient là autour de lui, si peu loin qu’il pouvait les regarder
comme en plein jour, couchés ou assis autour du foyer, rampant sur
leur ventre, tantôt avançant et tantôt reculant. Certains d’entre eux
dormaient, couchés en rond dans la neige, comme des chiens. Il ne
cessa pas un seul instant d’aviver la fl amme, car il savait qu’elle était le
seul obstacle entre sa chair et leurs crocs. Les deux chiens se pressaient
contre lui, implorant sa protection. De temps à autre, le cercle des loups
s’agitait ; ceux qui étaient couchés se relevaient, et tous hurlaient en
chœur. Puis ils se recouchaient ou s’asseyaient, le cercle se reformant
plus près.
Cependant, à force d’avancer d’un pouce puis d’un autre pouce,
un instant arriva où les loups le touchaient presque. Alors il prit des
brandons enfl ammés et commença à les jeter dans le tas de ses ennemis.
D’un saut hâtif accompagné de cris de colère et de grognements
peureux, ceux-ci bondissaient en arrière quand une branche bien lancée
atteignait l’un d’eux.
Le matin trouva l’homme hagard et brisé, les yeux dilatés par le
manque de sommeil. Il cuisina et absorba son déjeuner. Puis, quand
la lumière eut dispersé la troupe des loups, il s’occupa de mettre à
exécution un projet qu’il avait médité durant les longues heures de
la nuit. Ayant abattu à coups de hache de jeunes sapins, il en fi t, en
les liant en croix, les traverses d’un échafaudage assez élevé dont
quatre autres grands sapins restés debout formèrent les montants.
Se servant ensuite des courroies du traîneau comme de cordes, et les
chiens tirant avec lui, il hissa au sommet de l’échafaudage le cercueil
qu’il avait convoyé.
Histoires comme ça
Léopard dit à Baviaan (il faisait très chaud) :
– Où est parti le gibier ?
Baviaan cligna de l’œil. Ça, il savait.
L’Éthiopien dit à Baviaan :
– Pourriez-vous m’indiquer le présent habitat de la Faune
aborigène ?
(Ça veut dire la même chose ; mais l’Éthiopien se servait toujours
de mots qui n’en fi nissent pas. C’était une grande personne.)
Baviaan cligna de l’œil. Ça, il savait.
Alors, Baviaan dit :
– Le gibier est ailleurs. Tu peux le trouver. Tache. Mon avis,
Léopard ? C’est une question de tache.
Et l’Éthiopien dit :
– Tout ça est très joli, mais je désire connaître où a émigré la
Faune aborigène.
Alors, Baviaan dit :
– La Faune aborigène a rejoint la Flore aborigène, parce qu’il n’était
que temps pour elle de changer. Mon avis, Éthiopien ? Change, au plus tôt.
Ce discours embarrassa le Léopard et l’Éthiopien ; mais ils
partirent à la recherche de la Flore aborigène, et voici qu’après bien
des jours ils virent une grande, haute et vaste forêt pleine de troncs
d’arbres, et ‘sclusivement hachée, tachée, tachetée, marquée, sabrée,
barrée et bigarrée d’ombres. (Dites ça tout haut et vite, et vous verrez
ce qu’il devait y avoir d’ombres dans la forêt.)
– Qu’est ceci ? dit le Léopard. Il fait noir et c’est pourtant tout
plein de petits morceaux de lumière.

the Vosges with his wife and his cats.
