Coaches Report
This was a very disappointing tournament in all respects. After the huge improvements shown at the
Commonwealth Championships expectations were understandably high. Unfortunately the players were in no
condition to challenge their European counterparts. After the concerted effort in Australia upon returning home
every player returned to catch up on either their studies, work or to rehab injuries. This left the required
preparation at a bare minimum and unfortunately with such a weak build up our poor performance was inevitable.
The team is still very young with 8 of 13 players aged 20 or under who will gain from the international experience.
Overall the results highlight a number of weaknesses, these includes; lack of squad depth, lack of international
competitive experience, any physio and/or medical assistance without the players having to personally fund every
trip to the treatment room, a balanced lifestyle whereby if they go on international duty they’re not penalised upon
their return, an acceptable sized training venue, a place to lifts free weights, assistance with land conditioning
programmes and other sports science areas.
