Kimberley Swimming Club is a teaching swimming club with a competitive squad. The club was formed in
1977 by a few adults wanting to learn how to swim. It has now progressed to a club with the largest
membership in Notts. In 2004 it achieved Swim21 / Clubmark accreditation.
What kind of benefits has your club seen (please tick):
Increasing junior membership / Better access to facilities /
Retained more junior members / Discounts and other financial benefits /
Attracting and retaining more volunteers / Improved access to funding /
More and better coaching / Established more School Club Links
Improved performance / More partnership working
Better marketing and communications / Improved systems and structures /
Others (please specify)
What were the key challenges facing your club before you achieved accreditation?
The main challenge was apathy. The “We‟re doing all right why do we need to change”
mentality, also asking volunteers to take on more responsibility for their club.
As part of the accreditation process, what actions did you take to help to overcome these challenges?
(Include key people involved, timescales, partners and other support and help provided)
Actively involving the clubs volunteers in the process, visiting other clubs to see what was
involved in getting accreditation, and showing the club the benefits we could get from
accreditation. We set a target of a year and achieved accreditation in 6 months.
Please expand on the benefits you have seen since achieving accreditation? (focus on key success
factors that others may be able to benefit from)
We have achieved more pool time (albeit not enough). The club is run more professionally
now, we have more qualified „staff‟, our older swimmers tend to stay with the club in a
teaching/volunteer capacity, our membership has grown and we have had a swimmer appear in
the Nationals. We have set up a disability section in the club and two of these swimmers are
now part of the County Disability Squad,
Would you do anything differently next time? If so, please give details.
What will you do next to ensure continuous improvement?
Please provide a personal quote to offer support and advice to other clubs in a similar situation…
“Although the initial process of gaining Swim21 and Clubmark status involved a lot of hard work,
the positives have outweighed the negatives. I feel the club goes from strength to strength.
Clubmark gives people the knowledge that the club is well run, safe and child friendly which I think
shows in our large membership and a large waiting list to join the club”
