Cousins, Mark: The Story of Film (2004)
Recommended books:
Abrams, Nathan et al.: Studying Film.- Arnold 2001
Task-oriented, highly reradable introduction to film studies; strong on British cinema.
Adair, Gilbert (ed.): Movies.- Penguin 1999
Famous author Adair gives us a rattlebag of interesting articles.
Bell, Angela/Joyce, Mark/Rivers, Danny: Advanced Level Media.- Hodder&
Stoughton 1999
The book has been both praised and condemned, but for non-native teachers it is an excellent
resource book anyway.
Blandford, Steve et al.: The Film Studies Dictionary.- Arnold 2001
Aimed at students and fairly basic; still: one of the OK-books around.
David Bordwell, Kristin Thompson: Film Art: An Introduction, 7th International
Edition.- McGraw-Hill Education 2003
A fat book, but one of the classics!
Branston, Gill/Stafford, Roy: The Media Student's Book. Second Edition.-
Routledge 1999
A fat textbook full of good texts and even better ideas!
Buckland, Warren: Teach Yourself Film Studies.- Hodder Headline 1998
Serves beginners well.
Buscombe, Edward: Cinema Today.- Phaidon Press 2003
Huge and magnificent with stills galore and very good essays.
Butler, Andrew M.: Film Studies.- Pocket Essentials 2002
Very thin, very basic, very useful.
Connell, Barbara et al.: Examining the Media.- Hodder&Stoughton 1996
For students preparing for the GCSE; contains some useful material.
Cook, David A.: A History of Narrative Film.- Norton 4 2004
A 1000+ pages; seen as the definitive text in many US seminars.
Cousins, Mark: Story of Film.- Pavilion 2004
Very attractive new history.
Donellan Craig (series editor): Television and Censorship.- Issues for the Nineties,
vol.27
Certainly not the latest - but it might give you a few ideas.
Downes, Brenda/Miller, Steven: Teach Yourself Media Studies.- Hodder Headline
1998
Basic and informative.
Ebert, Roger: The Bigger Little Book of Hollywood Clichés.- Virgin 1999
Film guru Ebert has come up with a really entertaining collection. Check out the "Miracle of Available
Parking Space."
Gianetti, Paul: Understanding Movies. Tenth Edition.- Pearson 2005
Quite costly, but extremely helpful with the jargon. Good examples.
Glatzer, Robert: Beyond Popcorn. A Critic's Guide to Looking at Films.- EWU
Press 2001
Short, entertaining, informative – includes a chapter on "A List of All the Films You Have to See Before
You Die." So: carpe diem.
Gore, Chris: The 50 Greatest Movies Never Made.- St. Martin's 1999
Seems a shame...No "Biker Heaven" with Peter Fonda!
Grahame, Jemmy et al.: Advertising Pack&Video.- English Media Centre 1993
Fairly expensive AND dated, but still a good package of practical value. Get your school to buy it.
Hart, Andrew (ed.): Teaching the Media. International Perspectives.- Lawrence
Erlbaum Publ. 1998
Gives you an idea of media education in English speaking countries (they have it!)
Hart, Andrew: Understanding the Media. A Practical Guide.- Routledge 1991
Agreed - it IS a bit dated, but it comes highly recommended by English Media Studies teachers. So
why not give it a try?
Hayward, Susan: Key Concepts in Cinema Studies.- Routledge 2006 (3 rd edition)
Full of the jargon, but highly interesting; shows you there is more to it than just watching. For the more
ambitious in a Wahlpflichtfach.
Hill, John/Church Gibson, Pamela (eds.): The Oxford Guide to Film Studies.- OUP
1998
Comprehensive coverage means this book wants a serious-minded reader...
Java, John: Cult TV.- St Martin's Press 1985
Even if you haven't seen any of it it makes nice browsing.
Lewis, Jon E./Stempel, Penny: Cult TV.- Pavillon 1993
Somewhat dated - but quite good for research.
McLuhan, Marshall/Fiore, Quentin: The Medium is the Massage.- Bantam 1967
The classic!
Medved Harry/Medved, Michael: The Fifty Worst Movies of All Time.-
Angus&Robertson 1978
THAT'S entertainment...
Medved Harry/Medved, Michael: The Golden Turkey Awards.- Angus&Robertson
1980
And THAT'S entertainment...
Mejia, Elizabeth et al.: 102 Very Teachable Films.- Prentice Hall 1994
A nice volume to agree or rather disagree with.
Mendik, Xavier/Harper, Graeme (eds.): Unruly Pleasures. The Cult Film and Its
Critics.- FAB Press 2000
I honestly didn't know that one could write such a cleverclever article on Russ Meyer.
Meyer, David N.: The 100 Best Films to Rent You've Never Heard Of.- St. Martin's
1997
Quite amusing - you can check whether you've really never heard of the films or not.
Mirzoeff, Nicholas: An Introduction to Visual Culture.- Routledge 1999
Covers a wide range of visual forms (painting, TV, VR, Internet etc.) and should satisfy those who
want a wider scope.
Monaco, James: How To Read Film.- OUP 1981 (New edition: 2000!)
The classic! Every home should have one.
Nathan, Ian: 100 Videos You Must Own.- Empire n.d.
Sorry, no way of obtaining a copy; it was a supplement to an Empire magazine in 1998; watch out for
similar products, though.
Nelmes, Jill: An Introduction to Film Studies.- Routledge 1999
Hefty volume for those who are serious about studying film. Some genuinely absorbing sections plus a
handful mistakes.
Nelson, Craig: Bad TV. The Very Best of the Very Worst.- Delta 1995
Happy browsing for telly addicts.
O'Sullivan, Tim/Jewkes, Yvonne (eds.): Media Studies Reader.- Arnold 1997
Another hefty volume; the readings encompass a wide range of media and give you some necessary
background knowledge.
Peary, Danny, Cult Movies.- Vermilion 1982
Hard to get but a real treat.
Philipps, Patrick, Understanding Film Texts.- bfi 2000
Good introduction with lots of shortcuts in the margin(s).
Pramaggiore, Maria/Wallis, Tom: Film: A Critical Introduction.- Laurence King
Publishing 2005
Very attractive volume, highly accessible.
Puchalski, Steven: Slimetime. A Guide to Sleazy, Mindless, Movie Entertainment -
Stockport: Headpress 1996
Oh, the fun you can have with film titles (e.g. "Fat Guy Goes Nutzoid").
Oxford Resource Books for English Teachers
Highly useful series; watch out for Film, Video, Music&Songs, Newspapers and others.
Reah, Danuta: The Language of Newspapers.- Routledge 1998
One of the excellent satellite products that go with the core textbook Working with Texts.
Schneider, Steven Jay (ed.): 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die.- Quinttet
Publ. 2003
Good fun – you can spend hours arguing!
Stewart, Colin / Lavelle, Marc / Kowaltzke, Adam: Media and Meaning: an
introduction.- bfi Publishing 2001; pp. 465
Very comprehensive – a must have!
Taylor, Lisa/Willis, Andrew: Media Studies. Texts, Institutions and Audiences.-
Blackwell 1999
Accessible and recent introduction to the field of media studies.
Teasley, Alan B./Wilder, Ann: Reel Conversations. Reading Films with Young
Adults.- Heinemann 1997
Dated, of course – but still worth reading.
Thomson, David: The New Biographical Dictionary of Film.- Little, Brown 2002
An 800+ pp. must for every film fan.
VideoHounds Golden Movie Retriever 2008.- Visible Ink 2007
Of all the movie&video guides by far the best - better than Maltin's Guide because it contains 13 giant
indexes (and 26,000 film reviews). Woof!
Vogler, Christopher: The Writer's Journey.- Wiese Production 2 1998
Based on Campbell's "The Hero With a Thousand Faces", this is an interesting approach to storytelling
in film.
Voytilla, Stuart: Myth and the Movies. Discovering the Mythic Structure of 50
Unforgettable Films.- Wiese Production 1999
In the Vogler vein; for unforgettable films read "The Wrong Trousers" and "Silence of the Lambs".
Wall, Peter/Walker, Paul: Media Studies for GCSE.- Collins 1997
Hands-on on a fairly basic level.
Whitehead, Mark: Slasher Movies.- pocketessentials 2000
One in a very useful series. Brief, informative, to the point. Get the series!
