fixed, embedded, ultrathin-sectioned, and then stained with uranyl acetate and lead<br />
citrate. Notice that the inner and outer membranes of the cells are discernible and<br />
ribosomes are scattered in the cytoplasm but more toward the cell membrane. Some<br />
cells are undergoing cell division and have electron dense granules which are thought be<br />

was further incubated with 0.005% phytoncide for 6 h. Morphologically abnormal cells<br />
are prominent, which have distinct nucleotide and more electron dense granules.<br />
Ribosomes in the cytoplasm are densely located more toward the membrane. A few<br />
lysed ghost cells with sparse remnant of the cell body are observed and abnormally<br />
smaller sized, degenerated cells are also detected. (X 40,000 mag.)<br />

<strong>gingivalis</strong> 2561 grown up to optical density of 0.4 at 600 ㎚ was further incubated with<br />
0.005% phytoncide for 2 h. The cultured cells of P. <strong>gingivalis</strong> were centrifuged to<br />
collect the cell pellet. Total RNA was extracted from the cell pellet and subjected to<br />
RT-PCR to examine the expression of superoxide dismutase gene (sod ) and GapA<br />
housekeeping gene (gap A) as a control. Note that the expression of so d was<br />
dramatically decreased after the incubation with phytoncide.<br />
