4 INTRODUCTION.<br />

The Prince, soon after its publication in Italy, was translated<br />

into various languages. The following list includes most of the<br />

more important early translations, and may be found interesting<br />

as a proof of the extraordinary popularity of the book.<br />

A. Latin.<br />

i. Nicolai Machiavelli Reip. Florentinae a sccretis, ad Laurentium<br />

Medicem de Principe libellus: nostro quidem s<strong>ec</strong>ulo<br />

apprim6 utilis et n<strong>ec</strong>essarius, non mod6 ad principatum adipiscendum,<br />

sed ad regendum et conservandum : Nunc primum<br />

ii. Nicolai Machiavelli Princeps, Aliaque nonnulla ex Italico<br />

Latine nunc demum partita versa, partim infinitis locis sensus<br />

melioris ergo castigata, curante Hermanno Conringio--Helmestadii,<br />

166o. Again in 1661, 1686. Conring's translation is based<br />

upon that of Sylvester Telius, and the alterations he has introduced<br />

are not always improvements.<br />

iii. Nicolai Machiavelli Florentini Princeps, interprete<br />

Casparo Langenhert Philosopho. Qui sua ei commentaria<br />

adjeeit. Amstelaedami, 1699.<br />

B. French.<br />

far the most popular of all the translations. It contains a<br />

running comment intended to point out the resemblance between<br />

Machiavelli and Tacitus. A new translation appeared in 1696<br />
